Re: Hiwatt DR201 OT - Tube Town vs TAD

No, I used it, it is 200W (actually 250W)
Note: Tube-Town is a German vendor, so the weight unit is kilograms not lbs (equals roughly 11lbs) :D

Re: Hiwatt DR201 OT - Tube Town vs TAD

200W for guitar? Oumph! Whom do you want to kill with 200W? The audience will get the sound primarily via the PA. Moderate loudness on stage is a plus in my experience. Usually 100W in a guitar amp with a 4x12 is considered to be too loud already. right, more efficient speakers (or more of them) is ...

Re: Tube shield in a Hiwatt?

Electrolytics can and will dry out. This is accelerated by external heat. The degradation of Electros is gradual, so there is no instantaneous failure, they just get worse over time without noticing until they either fail or the amp gets noisy. All amps need a cap job from time to time. My tube bass...

Re: Ampeg Bass Amps?

during Ampeg was owned by Loud Technologies their support site offered a whole lot of schematics. Registering was easy, I didn't have to provide any proof that I was a professional (which I am not). I found everything I was interested in at that time. After Ampeg was sold to Yamaha I haven't checked...

Re: Blues Junior distorting and cutting out

I had one on my bench recently. A common fault is the carbon film plate resistors of the PI go bad. Check the voltages on the plates before and after the resistors. These Rs are known for intermittent or total failure. If one fails, the signal at the speaker misses one half of the cycle resulting in...

Re: Tube preamp pedal output impedance

in case you opt for a Mosfet, the LND150 can withstand tube-like voltage (up to 500V) and can be a direct replacement without changing a normal cathode follower topology (of course not in a tube socket) and it's dead cheap (pennies). It is widely used for this purpose.

Re: Reading Material on Steroids!

Hope, this is not redundant http://ampbooks.com/ lots of calculators and theory, very techie sometimes http://www.geofex.com/gtramps.htm/ very old fashioned site but great information, mostly on effects but great troubleshooting document on tube amps somewhere in the content... https://sound-au.com/...

Re: PI trimmer question

First of all, the ears decide what sounds good, no matter what imbalances there might be Good-Better-Best is not describing what happens as you have at least three major sources of imbalance that may need independent adjustment: - PI imbalance adjusting a trimmer to balance the AC output makes sense...

Re: Value of first power supply dropping resistor with different power transformer?

Hi, I would not change the topology. Calculating the drop resistor is no rocket science. But the core problem is, that B+ for 6V6es will be too high. Adding a resistor after the rectifier before the first cap/B+ tap acts like a sag resistor, mimicing the behaviour of a rectifier tube (dropping volta...

Re: DC power supply

The device is industrial grade not audio grade. I would stick to proven concepts like a simple regulator circuit for switching and a crude rectification and laaarge capacitance for dc heaters.

Here you go: https://ampbooks.com/mobile/amp-technology/layout/

Hmm, just read over it again: It's not about the ground scheme, it's about all other layout aspects...sorry, but a good read anyway

Re: Grounding points

I have to disagree with your second point, as there are very good reasons why the Dumble ground scheme results in a quiet amp. He seems to have incorporated features from Fender and Marshall, among others. There was some evolution, as you can see that in the early amps the last filter was located o...

Re: Tube Chassis Layout

What is the 1 Meg Pot for below the slope resistor in the tone stack? Apart from not knowing the purpose, you will have HT on that pot. They are not built for high voltage.

Re: Grounding points

The reason for having a good grounding is to avoid the risk of any high current flows in areas where they can harm. There are many commercial designs seemingly ignoring this and getting away with it (e.g. Dumble placed ground connections wherever they were convenient to reduce/avoid wire lenghts, us...

Re: Tube Chassis Layout

My thoughts were not to start with a simple amp and make it more complex later. This won't usually work for various reasons. It was the other way round. Check out a proven Amp as an inspiration that has all the bells and whistles you need, learn why it has the layout it has and adapt it to your need...
