Why does the Carr Rambler use a 12AT7 for V2?

I put in a short plate JJ's 12AX7 in V2 (along with new tubes for V1, long plate and V3, short plate - all 3 unbalanced) but noticed that the original schematic for V2 is an AT7. Why would this lower gain tube be used here? Is it for the reverb and tremolo portion of the circuit? (see attachment) Th...

Re: Anyone know the speaker impedance of a 1x12 Carr Rambler

ampmike It really is a wonderful amp..It's just that I am the second owner and it had Sovteks for all tubes (except an unknown USA V4 12AX7). So, I don't know if this is what Steve Carr used from the shop or not (hope not). Once I put in some JJ's (standard for the 3 Preamp tubes) and 2 matched for ...

Re: Carr Rambler oscillations on certain notes

sorry I was using the link at the bottom which was only the download to the file.
Don't click on any of the large "download buttons" Instead, "Click here to start download from sendspace" is the link you want directly to the file.

Didn't know how to attach the file to the post here.

Re: Carr Rambler oscillations on certain notes

good news...Backline (from tdpri.com) totally fixed this "second harmonic oscillation" issue. He can explain it better than me but we found out (I believe) a screen resistor for one of the 6L6's had gone bad. He replaced that and the wierdness went away while leaving the thick and rich 2nd order dis...

Anyone know the speaker impedance of a 1x12 Carr Rambler

I have an Eminence "The wizard" speaker in the amp and need to test/replace with another but only have a 4x10 set of speakers (2 ohms total) to test with.

Can I plug those speakers in the Carr?

Can't remember if I can load in that direction or if I have it backwards if the Carr is 8 ohms

Do I have to use a 12AX7EH to replace a 12AX7EH?

..or can I use different 12AX flavors for my 3 premap tubes?

Re: Carr Rambler oscillations on certain notes

Well, I sure didn't expect this response but here it is from the man himself, Steve Carr: "What you are hearing is fairly normal - there is some intermodulation distortion in the Rambler and it has a lot of 2nd order distortion that can add some synth sounding notes - this is why it is so rich and t...

Re: Carr Rambler oscillations on certain notes

Not sure what happened to the sound file (thought it was ok to post small attachments here)

Here's a link to the same file so you all can hear what I'm hearing.

Does it sound like a tube issue?

I recorded this issue and attached here. It's 585K file mp3 It does it in both Triode and Pentode modes I am playing some double bends and holding the bend when you can clearly hear the sound  I play two E bends (hear the issue) then one F bend (hear the issue) two G bends (no issue!) back to ...

pdf64 wrote:Any difference in triode or pentode mode? Triode mode will make your amp much more prone to power supply ripple modulating the signal, creating weird out of tune sub harmonics, at high signal levels. Pete.
Ooo good one! Let me try that and see what happens.
