Re: Friedman BE50 based build
Hi I have a BE50DLX and I'm looking for ideas to tame some high end on the HBE channel. Scheme: https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=383142#p383142 Could a cap piggybacked to R6 at the first stage or a cap at the gain wiper to ground work to roll of some highs, or will it have to opposite eff...

NOS Sovtek 5881 (1993)
HI
I have an acquaintance that have a box full of NOS Sovtek 5881 from 1993. Does anyone here know if they can take the plate voltage of 460-480?
I know the current 6L6WGC can handle it, but I'm not sure about the older ones. Anyone with insight on this matter?
Thanks!
J

Re: Rocket in progress (Clip added)
I was supposed to post a clip of the amp, but never got a chance to record one. Had the mike up today and did some poodle noodling
Sorry for the cheesy stuff, but at least you'll hear how it sounds
Thanks

Re: Cathode follower resistor value in Rocket
Thanks guys!
I'll drop the 100K to a 56K and have a listen. The 100K was a mistake that I just discovered, so a 56K for less gain sounds promising.
Thanks
Joakim

Re: Cathode follower resistor value in Rocket
Holy Resurrection Batman!! :D Regarding the 100K v.s 56K cathode follower to ground. A 56K would yield more gain and compression compared to a 100K, or is it the other way around? I'm pretty sure a 56K gives more gain than a 100K, but I'll drop the question, because some threads states the opposite...

Re: Rocket in progress (Clip added)
Joakim, this is a very beautiful build. Regarding the EL84s, I have not tried any modern valves but recently I found that I rather liked how those old Telam EL84s react. There's a guy in Poland who sells Telam pairs in cigarette packets. TFKs pressed my button too. Right now I have a mix of both in...

Re: Rocket in progress (Clip added)
Well? How does it sound with all that high-class kit crammed in that little purple hole? It looks fantastic! Thanks Reeltarded! Well, it sounds nice. I can not dial in a harsh sound on this amp. It's smooth. I've only played it through my 4X12 loaded with WareHouse ET-65's (G12-65 clones), but the ...

Re: Rocket in progress (Clip added)
The amp is finally done and I fired it up yesterday. It was running way hot, so I had to increase the cathode resistors from 120 ohm to 147 ohms. The amp settled at 75% plate dissipation. It cleaned up considerably, but I guess I could go even higher on the cathode resistors. The added cathode resis...

Re: Rocket in progress (Clip added)
Boy this amp looks spectacular !! My only concern would be your condensers. Maybe its just my amp, but my rocket gets Hot !! I haven't measured the temp. I just know I have a hard time trying to sink enough heat to run a vvr. It may be to warm for the bees wax. Thanks keewee I don't use the bees wa...

Re: Rocket in progress (Clip added)
The heaters are done and it took a while. I caved in and used the drill to get it right. I also made a little board for the cathode resistors and caps.
The Switchcraft jacks are gone and replaced with Cliff jacks. Thought I'd try out the Larry grounding scheme.

Re: train wreck grounding
What about the input and speaker jacks when using the Larry scheme?
Do you isolate the switchcraft jacks or replace them with Cliff's or do you leave them as they are?

Re: Rocket in progress (Clip added)
Power board done and transformers and standoffs installed. The chassis work was a pita.. I think this is the first and last chassis I'll ever drill & punch. Just too much work. I think it's about time to heat up the solder iron and get to work soon. Anyone have some input regarding that choke I'm ab...
