Re: where are you guys getting your wire?

+1 on Apex Jr. and rj. I use the Teflon insulated solid wire from Apex and the non-irradiated PVC from rj. I don't need anything else.

Re: Ransomware

Thanx guys, what you said is mostly way over my head, but I did buy a copy of Bitdefender. It was a bitch to install, never seen anything so clunky and user unfriendly, but I'm running it in conjunction with MalwareBytes Premium and Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit. Don't know how that will help but I've n...

Ransomware

I have run into this twice in the last few weeks, both from the same source. (It displays the same contact phone #). In both cases an immediate manual power down was effective, but I am wondering how this stuff gets past my malware protection, and what else I might do to prevent it. I have Malwareby...

Re: Silicone Insulation v. Teflon?

I've been using solid 20 ga Teflon hookup wire for years without problems. Maybe if you were to use 22 ga or smaller that would increase the risk of breakage, and stranded wire I use only occasionally on heater wiring. The only prior objection to Teflon I've seen is Ken Fischer didn't like it becaus...

Re: CTS pot codes

I have lots of 30% 1MA CTS pots from a group buy that Jelle Welagen ran about a year ago. The shaft extension is 3/8 but the threaded shank length is only 1/4, not 3/8. Too bad, as I don't really need anywhere near as many as I have. Are you sure you want 30% for a Wreck? At least on the vol pot? I ...

Re: Caps...Why am I driving myself nuts!!!

I've used older NOS Sprague 6PS caps with success, 40+ years old difilms ie paper/mylar construction. Some say they don't sound quite the same as the Mallory PVC, but I have also seen it stated that at one point both were made in the same factory and were identical but just labeled differently. At s...

Re: Parallel Secondaries

From what I've gathered, both here and at the EL34 forum, yes it can be done but it's safer and also better sounding to split the two output tube pairs to their own OTs and then feed each OT to its own 1x12 cabinet. I'm hatching something along those lines because I have a pair of old NOS Stancor A-...

Re: Liverpool with ECL82 instead of EL84

I think I'll order one.

Yes, that is a custom SG Special I built 14 years ago. I modeled it on a beat up '65 SG Standard I had at that time. flame maple top cap, quilt and birdseye maple back cap, Madagascar rosewood f'board and my own wound P-90s. Neck goes thru the body to below the tailpiece.

Re: Liverpool with ECL82 instead of EL84

A friend told me today he likes the G12-65 too on a Wreck. He didn't say if H or M, I will ask.

Update: He suggested the Scumback M75 PVC is worth a try. (PVC=Paper Voice Coil). A bit closer to the old pre Rola spec. Only rated 22W but that's OK in this case as my Liverpool will only be 15W.

Liverpool with ECL82 instead of EL84

Started building this recently. Will be a half power L'pool as 4xECL82 (6BM8) adds up to 15W. Using 12AX7 pre-tubes, not the triodes in the ECL82s. Why 4xECL82, not 2x6V6? I have always been a fan of four power tube amps, but I don't need a 30W Liverpool. My question is, in a 1x12 open back cab, wou...

Re: Redstone Transformer Replica

Never heard of them, but there's not even any pics of their actual transformers, or how they make them, so all you have is some marketing stuff.

I would like to think these are a good product but I would want more detail. Without that what you have now is all hat and no cattle.

Just assuming the transition is A to high AB1 to low AB1 to B. I don't know that.

Re: 1x6L6G SE 10W maybe.

Steve, I fixed the initial distortion problem by changing the Stancor A-3852 OT shown in the pics to a proper SE OT, the Hammond 125DSE, which is about twice the weight of the Stancor. I just haven't taken a new pic of the amp as it is now. The Stancor was a general purpose OT without an air gap, an...

1x6L6G SE 10W maybe.

I did this one while waiting on a shipment from RJ for a 4x6BM8/ECL82 Liverpool, now beginning. This is a rework of an old early '50s Valco/Supro circuit that used a 6V6, upgraded to a 6L6. Modeled after a period Canadian combo knockoff that a friend has. It is unusual in that it has a huge 40uF oil...
