Re: The Legend has passed
God Speed HAD and thanks for all the great designs and inspiration. God Bless You. I am a late comer to Dumble amps, having finally realised 10 years ago that all those wonderful amp sounds, I have heard for decades, were coming from H. A. Dumble. I then fell down the "Dumble Rabbit Hole" also, usin...

Re: CONVERTING: MESA BOOGIE 50 Caliber+ to DUMBLE
Hi Franco, That sounds good; very Jazz oriented Clean. We are more into the sounds of OD & Distortion, but we also love having a good Clean sound. I think this 102 amp will be very good for the owner, sound wise and the Boogie cab and parts will provide a suitable platform on which to build it. We w...

Re: CONVERTING: MESA BOOGIE 50 Caliber+ to DUMBLE
Hi NGW, I am attaching some photos of an amplifier that I made for a friend who plays jazz. He was in love with the shape of the Mesa Boogie amp and found a well-sized wood cabinet with a sienna speaker cover. The choice for the music that he plays went to a JM / Wonderland clone on a chassis bough...

Re: Can you increase girth without increasing wattage?
RG, Thank you for another informative post. Is is OK with you, if I use or quote your explanation, to help answer my clients questions? It is so difficult sometimes, to explain the need for diagnostic testing, to avoid the debate about what various guitarists will think is the answer, due to their s...

Re: CONVERTING: MESA BOOGIE 50 Caliber+ to DUMBLE
Thanks rootz, I was thinking of building two amps, so we can compare low plate and high plate. He mostly uses his Les Pauls or SG, but he also uses a nice Strat. He likes the smooth OD of a Zendrive and also likes to add more OD as well, like the Boogie. We may keep the Boogie Graphic EQ after the O...

CONVERTING: MESA BOOGIE 50 Caliber+ to DUMBLE
Hi all, Last year I posted about finding a PCB/Cct board for a Mesa/Boogie 50 Caliber+. http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=33523 I had no luck finding anything and was going to build the owner a new replica amp on eyelet board, but he said he would wait until he decided on what he wanted...

Re: Treble bleed/Fizz/Ice Pick reduction Bypass Caps - What types do you blokes use
If I use ceramics I use the C0G/NPO version for reasons explained in the following link https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/technical-articles/x7r-x5r-c0g...-a-concise-guide-to-ceramic-capacitor-types/ Lately I've been using WIMA FKP2 1000V(Polypropylene film caps) for caps in the 33-100pF range 5mm l...

Re: Treble bleed/Fizz/Ice Pick reduction Bypass Caps - What types do you blokes use
Anyone have any comments on using ceramic caps for snubbers, instead of film/foil/mica caps?
I don’t have dog ears and I can’t hear any difference.

Re: Treble bleed/Fizz/Ice Pick reduction Bypass Caps - What types do you blokes use
I finally got back to this after a few days of very bad internet access, thanks to my service provider. by mhuss » Sat Apr 03, 2021 4:45 am I think the OP question was concerning if the type of capacitor made a difference (not the pros and cons of adding anti-fizz caps)? I think small caps are very ...

Re: Treble bleed/Fizz/Ice Pick reduction Bypass Caps - What types do you blokes use
Stevem, insulated wire makes more sense. I dont think a bare wire, attached to HT (and wrapped around the low voltage grid, where you don't expect to find HT), would be a good idea and not something I would do anyway. pdf64, thanks for the interest and comments. The discussion is moving into the des...

Re: Treble bleed/Fizz/Ice Pick reduction Bypass Caps - What types do you blokes use
Stevem,
I haven't had any adverse problems with my high gain amp work, related to treble reducing caps but, that is an interesting idea to try.
So you use bare wire and only insulate the end? Should the wire be wrapped tight?
My scope is my friend.

Treble bleed/Fizz/Ice Pick reduction Bypass Caps - What types do you blokes use
Just wondering what types of caps you blokes use for treble bleed/fizz/ice pick reduction in high gain amps and where you prefer to fit them? I want to try some different types, from the film caps I have been using, to hear what, if any, tone differences there are. Also, do you hear much difference ...

Re: GRETSCH 1962 6161 COMBO - INFO & ADVICE NEEDED
Needs Coffee, I tend to agree that the sound is OK, but not amazing, but it is what it is; an example of an old original amp from the early days that is working well (until the old caps crap out). I couldn't convince him to let me make it like new spec., but that's what he wanted. It sure is a nice ...

Re: GRETSCH 1962 6161 COMBO - INFO & ADVICE NEEDED
I have to agree with you Stevem. It is a very basic operation, to wire an OT and a simple exercise to verify that the wires have gone to where they belong. I told the owner and he told me that he had taken some pix of the the internals when he got the amp and on checking them, the wires were on the ...
