Re: Fetron
More on the modern updated Gibson managed Mesa here. Geeze I was thinkin' about becoming a Mesa dealer 30ish years ago when the buy-in was a whopping 20 grand. Glad I didn't go there. A store carrying Mesa popped up only a mile away. Let them have the headaches. https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/...

Re: Fetron
I guess other amplifiers that have bias controls are just lucky, or they have a smarter customer base. Maybe the Mesa tone appeals to a particular demographic. Buzz Buzz. Guitarists who want to sound distorted all the time plus have a double hatful of knobs to turn and sliders to slide. One of the ...

Re: Fetron
FWIW very early Mesas, 1970's, DID have bias pots. A yellow cube with slot for adjusting. My theory is Mr Smith decided to do away with them after users/techs spun the pot until tube plates glowed red for a "proper" tone. In not too very long owners of those amps would be demanding warranty repairs,...

Nice!! Thanks for the report, Leo. Good to see you back here again. And thanks for that dorrisant! I do stop in from time to time, lots of good things going on here too. You got a nice mention on MEF last couple days, for offering your help in getting them back on their digital feet. Much appreciat...

Re: Music Electronics Forum
Just tapped on my MEF bookmark a few minutes ago and BINGO! Looks like they're finally back on the air with no access problems. Site says "new & improved". Indeed it looks a bit different. Haven't had but a quick peek so that's all I can honestly report at the moment.

Re: Marlboro amp
There IS a solid state forum ssguitar, I've had a couple looks and it's pretty good. Some other well known gear sites also have solid state departments. About Marlboro, I was donated one maybe 25 years ago by a fellow who graduated to owning and playing competent tube amps. Now he maintains his own ...

Re: '63 Showman with two 15" JBL Silver cone 16 ohm speakers
I'd just make sure the amp & speakers are all working and SELL as-is. The aluminum dust dome on JBL's (Altecs also) acts as a bit of a tweeter, giving extended high frequency response with a bit of a peak generally 2K - 6KHz. Those seeking clear bright tone love these speakers. And it takes a player...

Seven foot tall beatles, now there's something you don't stumble across every day. Hope you're enjoying the local cuisine - finch & chimps - and you gotta try a chip butty what they had for a treat as kids. Bit heavy on the carbs that last one. Where else are you traveling?

Re: Music Electronics Forum
I get into it too... Using a different browser. Which browser do you use for that? Sure would be good to check up on the MEFsters. I'm worried about a permanent disappearance too. There's a deep well of repair knowledge there. Also a long running pickup forum addressing novices thru experts. Good t...

Re: New power transformer in Fender Bassman AB165 buzzing
Do you see expected voltages from the secondaries? How much current does the amp draw from the AC line while transformer is making its racket? Also would be interesting to know if the transformer carries on buzzing when driving no loads, and what the AC current draw is in that condition.

Re: What're you listening to right now??
Larry Coryell, "The Essential" compilation popped up on YT. Dial the time machine back 50 years - I had some of his LP's back then, also his band Eleventh House played my college a couple times. Some gnarly tones there, also lots of awesome innovative playing. With this kind of music I don't need a ...

maint_tech, I've tried your link but it always "times out". Curious what wonders chriselectronics may have for us. Might be that your browser doesn't have the right plugin installed. Maybe it does... Just ol' reliable Firefox here, everything else seems to work OK. maint tech says the site "...

Re: New capacitor line from Jupiter
“life-like vibrance, true presence, dreamy aural decay, and detail to take your breath away.” I guess that justifies the farcical pricing. Confirmation bias, anybody? I s'pose if you pay nosebleed prices for components, or entire amps, guitars, effects etc, that means that they must sound fa...

Re: 5E3 clean headroom
So if you turn the guitar’s vol control down a bit, can you get a loud, clean sound out of the amp? eg loud enough for someone trying to watch the telly in the next room to get rather annoyed. Not so, that'S the issue or a result of it. At the clean volume I can play in the next room without bother...
