Re: How did you get into tube gear?

My dad was an electrician by trade, but he was always futzing with things. In my teens he bought a few books and equipment, and started repairing all things electronics for the local Good Will. If he needed any parts, he'd just buy them and kept a record of expenses, and if something was interesting...

Re: Amp Grounding

I like the Peavey Classics "dual ground returns thru 47 ohm resistors " set up. Used it in a number of amps. It is the same on the Classic 20, 30 and 50 amps.

Re: Vox AC4hw hum problem (structural) lay out needed

Tough luck to get an amp that was designed one way and built another. Don' think I've ever run into something like this (other than a number of vintage Gibsons that are notorious for changing parts and minor circuit changes.) No excuse for Vox, though. Gut it and rebuild it like it should be, includ...

Suggestion

You have probably looked for help on the internet, but if not check if other users on vox sites have had the same problems. I bought a 15W Vox Mini 3 years ago, and noticed a growling sound as the sound faded. A search on the net revealed that a lot of people had the same problem. A number of modifi...

Re: Silverface Deluxe Reverb Hum

I apologize to most of the viewers here, but one poster had not one, but two snide remarks about the advice I had given. I do not pretend to know it all, but I do have a lot of experience with amps, and there was nothing about my original suggestions that were out of the box.

SORRY

My reply 1) I pulled up a fender DR schematic and referenced a connection adjoining the area mentioned that MIGHT be a problem and 2) suggested a freeze spray (computer cleaner sprays work well,..just up-end the can and spray each component) to eliminate or perhaps quickly find the problem. I've bee...

Re: Silverface Deluxe Reverb Hum

I always recommend using a refrigerant spray first,..to see if any components or contacts react thermally. This is a quick way to find minor problems.

You might check the 22uf /25V cap on the return tube (V4A)

Re: Silvertone model 1484 reverb

I was wondering what to do with one of these piezo amps (mine was a 185.10410) a couple years ago. One day I hopped on eBay and saw one for sale, also with a bad piezo. In the description the owner mentioned, that when the piezo was removed, the input and output could be used as as an effects loop w...

Re: Anybody tried the hubcaps

I'd say save your money. I designed and sold the "Speaker Tweaker" (the first product made to disperse an guitar amp's sound), in the 1990s, which was about the same thing. Some liked it,..some didn't hear the difference. If you can return them if not satisfied,..go for it. But don't spend big bucks...

Re: Gibson GA55V schemo

I wouldn't be surprised if there are variations on the schematics. I did repairs for 15 years, and still work on friends' amps. I don't remember if I never saw a Gibson schematic match the the amp, but generally not. Others have postulated that Gibson seemed to build a lot of amps differently than t...

Here' where to find it

I found the correct schematic in my Electric Guitar Amplifier Handbook. fourth edition by Jack Darr, on page 213. The 1st edition was the first amp book I bought, circa 1968. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner. Perhaps you can find this shown on the internet. If not,..buy the fourth edition. Lots ...

Re: Adding an effect loop

It looks like it will work fine, but the "original" Dumbler is quite the same, and has a very mellow sound. I run mine from a 210 volt source driving a 12AX7. I have changed a few of the values to get the sound I like, but it's a great starting place. Not knocking the device you show, I just prefer ...

Re: Priceless tube tester

I don't think you have a complete schematic. You'll notice on the attached schematic there are a number of connections, etc that are not shown on your drawing.
