My Learning Started Here: The 5E3

I'm building a 5E3 with minimal changes from the remaining dregs of my FIRST EVER build. It was funny tearing all the turrets off this board and vividly remembering years upon years ago putting this thing together. What nostalgia! Anyway, mostly stock. NOS caps. Classic Tone iron. Pretty basic other...

Re: Who likes/has EV SROs?

Bill, that's one hell of a speaker! Very nice. I'm looking at a 12" that is kinda beat up and has a Wald recone. I don't know if that's a desirable thing, but as a rule, since it's been reconed, I will assume it isn't. It's not terribly expensive and that's why I'm giving it some thought. I'm also o...

Re: Marshall Mercury - looking for info

A guy that's brought me two identical repairs (LOL) has one of these and he keeps telling me he wants me to give it a tune up. If he ever does bring it by, I'll post a pic or two.

Who likes/has EV SROs?

These speakers recently grabbed my attention again and I'm wondering if folks here who like them can point me in the direction of some good sound references. I've found a minimal amount of content on YouTube for these.

Glad to see TAG revitalized!

Re: [QUESTION] Altec Lansing 417 12" vs EVM 12L

My 2x12 with old EVM12Ls sounds fantastic. It's an oval back Tone Tubby cab. Only downside is how heavy that box is. I built a 1x12 and I generally keep a 70s Altec 417 8H in there. I found a pristine pair on eBay a couple years ago, same with the EVMs. Buying speakers online sucks, but if all turns...

Yeah yeah, go ahead and be modest as hell. :P

Your clips always sound superb!

Re: Koa spears resistors

I use those exclusively now where I deem appropriate. FWIW, I have used them as plate load resistors, but typically I prefer 1w or 2w. They have very nice thick leads.

Re: current recto

I'm just curious why you're interested in what a rectifier tube sounds like.

FWIW, I've swapped the TAD 5AR4 around in a ton of amps with lots of startups and playing sessions and it is a solid tube, which is what you want in a rectifier.

There's a video or two of Jelle's Tweedle D played by Matt Rae. Sounds good, but then again everything Matt Rae does sounds good. :)

Re: Champion 600 Rebuild Thread

Check out another one I just did for a friend. This one's cab doesn't buzz like mine. It's funny, the last time I saw this particular friend of the family, he was buying this very amp from a guitar shop that isn't around any more. That was a good few years ago. This one is my favorite so far when it...

I bet you have a second copy under your mattress...

It's nice that Sozos are much reduced now. I have a build that will be using a few.

Re: OD Deluxe for sale

So, will these " meticouslessly replicated" combos come with a vintage Altec 417 too, like the original has? For $5500, I'd expect one. I have a vintage 417 in my garage, I will take 5450 for it..... But is it one of the special rare ones that are nearly impossible to find and can give you th...
