Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
Turn it up and use a les paul with low output pickups like PAF's.

Head cabinet for CE chassis
Where is a good place to buy a head cabinet for a 100 watt CE chassis?I just want a black tolex head cabinet to install a chassis into.

Re: Phase Inverter Circuit Differences between SSS#2 and SSS #4
The CF configuration is a bit scary with the large voltage potential between the plate and the cathode, but I guess the 12AX7 CF runs fine with it, what's your experience? It does not shorten the life of the tube, does it? Mesa Boogie amps have high cathode voltages in cathode follower positions an...

Re: #102 Build started
If you think the Mallory 150's are a dark cap Evil or Very Mad Try using P&O.. Shocked I used NOS Russian paper in oils on one build and it's the most transparent and articulate of all my builds. No darkness at all. I find them to be very clear sounding.715 orange drops are great too. I find a litt...

Re: New D-Lite style build
I built the cab, chassis and the whole amp from scratch. It's Vox black tolex with a rough blonde fender style on the front valance. finger jointed poplar. It's the same dimensionally as a Deluxe Reverb without the slanted front. The big Hammond OT got in the way of the speaker but the balance is perf...

New D-Lite style build
Here is my newest D style build with 6V6's. It looks like a badcat in a way but it's basically a 183 circuit with a couple twists.Sounds awesome with a strat too.Rola G12 65 Celestion

Re: What EL84's do you like?
I have found that with a lot of EL84's the current that's run through them has a huge bearing on the tone. For example, most amps that use EL84's are cathode biased. If people took the time to check plate disipation even on cathode biased amps then some tubes that sound mediocre could sound better with...

Re: Strat/Dumble. Always a problem for me until today!
My latest strat is an American Special, ash body, w/texas specials, maple neck and 70's headstock and I was all prepared to swap out the texas specials but this guitar loves them! Through my 183 circuit Overdrive Rocket amp it is divine! I don't play distorted music with inbetween positions, only the s...

Re: Parallel V2?
I'm thinking it would be better to use the unused triode as an extra gain stage, cold bias it and adjust the V2A voltage divider to get the gain level right without a squealing, wretching mess of feedback. A friend over on the Hoffman forum did just that and he says it's awesome. Not a 'wreck per se a...

Re: Parallel V2?
I bet it would sound pretty fat.I like the way a paralleled tube sounds on the input of an 18 watt amp,not sure how it would sound on a 'wreck.Only one way to find out!

Re: gain control in express amp
Anyway, can't use the type 4 with this layout, but I know a guy who added a pot in place of the voltage divider to v2 and says it's awesome. He also added a pot between the last stage and the PI as a master volume(pre-PI) and it also had great results. Yes,I know it changes the circuit into something e...

Re: gain control in express amp
I don't want to use an attenuator and without losing the original 'killer' tone of this circuit,I am heading toward just using a master volume of some kind. I gutted a Marshall class 5 recently and hand-wired it into a 'wreck circuit and it made the original circuit sound really lame. That amp is ok ...

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
I just built a D'Lite version with 6V6's and I used 10uf bypass caps instead of 5uf and that helped a bit with single coils. However,it shows a 270pf treble cap on the Dlite layout and if you sub in a .0015uf cap instead,or even a .002uf,the amp blossoms like crazy.Or at least it did with mine. Thos...

Re: gain control in express amp
Not looking for headroom, just trying to get that beautiful gain at a lower volume and possible a little less distortion. I'm not opposed to a PPIMV like the Lar-Mar but I wanted a preamp gain control so I can control how much gain there is for the sake of versatility. So I'm going to try a voltage d...
