Re: Express Dead

O.K. Instructions said take reading from pin 8 (low) to pin 3 (high). That is what I did. Smoke. Should have taken pin 8 to ground?

Maybe this helps.

Express Dead

OK.....I bought a Biastool. Instructions required a reading for cathode to plate voltage. I had the tubes in while taking this reading. Smoke started rising from the socket (filament wire maybe). Tube was not glowing anymore. The second power tube was glowing. Turned it off (obviously). Removed the ...

Re: anyone have a Bill of materials for any of the wrecks?

I wouldn't consider all these components "High" quality. There are a multitude of options to upgrade your build. For example....I used Vishay Dale resistors + or - 1%. Sozo tone caps. Switchcraft input, output jacks. Whatever you fancy. It's all in this forum. Just search. This is a good list to use...

A few pictures.

Here she is. I've tweaked a bit. Overall, an awesome amp. My bright switch was noisy. I clipped it off and used the 100 pf cap for now. That is bright enough for me. I'll put a better switch in its place. I want to replace the tube sockets also. They squeal if they touch the metal base sides. Cheap ...

Re: Irene was born today

Humbucker, The Trim Pot was the 25K bias adjustment on the power board. My Tubes must have been under biased causing buzzzzz. To reduce Hisssss, you can change to lower gain pre amp tubes. 12AU7's virtually eliminate the hiss, but lower gain. Great for clean tone. The Tubestore has a chart that show...

Re: Irene was born today

I was correct in thinking the trim pot would fix the buzzziness to certain loud notes and chords. I put the trim pot in (after waiting a month to receive it from Mouser) and the buzzzz is gone. Just great sustaining tone. Still has hiss. But, that's what ya get. I'm a happy camper. Now, How to prope...

Irene was born today

Thanks to all the information on this forum, I've built my first tube amp. I'm naming her Irene. My wifes name. At first there was no volume. I could tap on the chassis and heard it loud and clear. The amp was working, but not through the input jack. I checked all the voltages. They were good. I the...

Re: Fuse wiring

Thanks guys...I see Francesca has black wire (I assume hot) to the fuse. My power cord black wire is the hot. If you've done it that way.....I will too. Thanks again.

Fuse wiring

Basic question.....I've seen pictures of black wire or white wire from mains cord to fuse holder and then to power switch. Should common go to fuse holder, or hot? I want to get this one right before I wire it.

Supplier for 1K 25 watt cement resistor?

I've got it on order from Mouser......no stock (you guys have them all!) They can't ship untill November!!!! You folks know of another good supplier? I've searched....www.cpcares.com has them. That's about it. My build will be slow. Maybe that's good? I only need about 3 more parts to start. For the...

I just ordered a chassis w/faceplate

I just ordered a chassis (my first "Express" build) and a faceplate from Nik. I'm in no hurry....I have 3 other amps to noodle with. I will have questions....hopefully only a few. This forum is packed with most of the answers already. I'll let you know when my parts arrive. I ordered some parts from...
