Re: Bias Supply Droppers

As the thread title indicates, those are voltage-dropping resistors. The value of these Rs depend primarily on the voltage of the secondary. Think about it the same way you think about the HT supply. The first cap is a 'reservoir' cap that is followed by another PI filter (dropping R and cap). You'l...

Re: London Power Standard - finished pic and soundclip

V2 - After rolling a bunch of tubes through the preamp, I found that a JJ 12AX7MG for V1 and JJECC803 for V2 sounded best to me. I tried some Mullard and TungSols as well but didn't like them as much. Did you use the LTPI from TUT5? The latest version uses a gain stage + Cathodyne PI - I used a 12A...

apologies for the delay. the noise was due to a bad pot (master, if I recall). The amp turned out pretty good. I'd like to try a 25 watt variant, though....

Re: reducing the signal to the PI on a 2204

would it help to add a resistor between the coupling cap and the PI? The answer is yes. Such a series R will form a voltage divider with the 1M grid leak in the PI. So if you add 1M series R, you'd drop the signal in half The LTP grid reference resistors are subject to local and global negative fee...

Re: reducing the signal to the PI on a 2204

I'm going to return to the original question in the first post. That is, would it help to add a resistor between the coupling cap and the PI? The answer is yes. Such a series R will form a voltage divider with the 1M grid leak in the PI. So if you add 1M series R, you'd drop the signal in half. The ...

TW iron in a high-gain Marshall-inspired build?

Has anyone used TW iron in a higher-gain Marshall style amp (with at least 2204 preamp gain)? If so, how did it work out? How did it change the Marshall tone?

Re: PSA: Cheep Heyboer iron on eBay

the 337-0-337 PT has 3.5 secondaries with only 3A. It says its 40 Watts and good for EL34. Isn't the 3A a little light for EL34s?

capacitor ripple current

Hey guys. I'm hoping someone can tell me what an ecap's ripple current spec means and whether that value should be high or low. I assume it is the amount of internal AC current the cap can handle, that it varies inversely with the cap's ESR (and other things like temperature), and that it should be ...

Re: So, NFB Is Good, But......?

Gene - 1. Home amp settings often don't cut through the mix in a band setting. Have you tried cranking the mids in a live setting to cut through? Maybe you need to alter your tone stack values too (e.g., replace 25k mid pot with 50k). 2. I think the Reason Bambino uses the same cathode-biased 6AQ5 p...
