Re: We need to relearn listening and get Hifi back in our lifes!

All this stuff you're doing is very cool, thanks for sharing! I'm still taking in the CAPS concept, really intrigued with everything but it's a bit pricey. Can you point me to a power supply and a house for a Hiraga project?

Re: We need to relearn listening and get Hifi back in our lifes!

L710. Great set of speakers you've got! Thanks, you too. I really scored on 'em, perfect metal grills, pretty wood and cloth driver surrounds. Funny thing, I thought I wanted "big box" sound, like early Advents, but the L710s sound pretty big, way more detailed. I've thought about doing the caps bu...

Re: We need to relearn listening and get Hifi back in our lifes!

Cool thread. A few years back I realized I was sick to death of playback through my 90s receiver/bookshelf, computer speakers, low end m-audio monitors... I was sick of all of it. So over some months I put a low budget system together piecemeal. I looked at a lot of 60s/70s gear, I thought I wanted ...

Re: Cap job I did on a Bogner Shiva recently

I just want to concur with what Billy said about old Japanese caps. A couple years back my Yamaha M-50 (1983) was dropping a channel and I got Cliff to look at it. I figured while I was at it I'd have him do the caps, but he advised the original caps were still fine. Good call, saved me $$$ and the ...

So, is everybody familiar with Laur Jaomets by now?

He's the young guitarist that country traditionalist Sturgill Simpson imported from Estonia. He's like 22, killer blues rocker now A-list Nashville tele twanger. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=laur+jaomets In this interview he talks about his connection with stellar American rockers Ri...

Re: 1st build hemming and hawing

Thanks for the nice words. My wife now volunteers with the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Austin and last night they held their annual fund raiser called Art Bra. 6 months in the planning, they raised over 75 grand which directly assists Central Texas women, and occasionally men, facing breast can...

Re: New version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqQLZYCUPZ8&list=PLyehC0oZ6gUdsu5TI1j0QYcf-ddfDccPb This should work :D I saw Greg Allman last month and that was pretty much the arrangement but with less slide, horns and second keyboard. I remember thinking it seemed short and sweet for Whipping Post, like around ...

Closure

Reviving this zombie may be self indulgent, but it's a bit closure for me so here goes. Like 18 months ago I began this boy-meets-champ thread, my attempt at amp building. I got a champ kit from Triode Electronics. I began with wiring the turret board, mounting transformers, jacks, sockets. I hit so...

Re: 1st build hemming and hawing

You're exactly right, I'll have to drill the board for the standoffs. I don't see any way around it. I think a dremel will work but I'll have to get a bit. I'm dumbfounded that someone would engineer a turret board including thru holes for the lead wires but stop short at drilling for the fasteners....

Re: 1st build hemming and hawing

My kit included two short metal hex standoffs (threaded nut on one end, threaded post on other end.) With all the hardware mounted, only two chassis holes remain. I suppose the standoffs may go there -- the holes are the correct size -- but the hole positions seem odd. The alignment would go right d...

Re: 1st build hemming and hawing

Okay, that worked. The nut sucked up just fine with a wrench. My experience with plastic bolts is limited to toilet seat fasteners .

My last hardware issue is that the turret board does not fasten to the two standoffs. Does the board just rest on top of them?

Re: 1st build hemming and hawing

I put pliers on the nut and, holding the barrel in my hand I was able to force it up to maybe 4 threads but that's still not even close. And I swear it's not cross-threaded. I think I'll try a vise, cause it seems like it wants to thread but it's just super tight. So Mark, you can thread these by ha...

Re: 1st build hemming and hawing

During hardware assembly I ran into this bugaboo. The nut for the nylon fuse holder just threads a rev or two and stops. Is there a trick? I thought about getting a better part but Hoffman's looks the same and i didn't look further.

What's with the notch on the nut? It kinda looks like a keyway?

I don't know why you'd look to OS X for that...bloat floating on top of Linux. :P
I thought it floated on FreeBSD?
