Re: New build - Torroid layout ok?
I've done two builds with Antek PTs. I think the idea that torroidals don't have hum issues is more theory than reality. Both amps came out fine but in both cases I spent some quality time doing the headphone test to find the best placement. In my AC30 clone build the OT ended up off axis, and in th...

Re: AC30-type Circuit with Channel Switched OD?
I've been designing an amp with two channels, the EF86 normal channel and a top boost channel with a dumble style OD that's switchable, but not completed it yet. From what I understand, though some people say the OD into the EL84's doesn't sound right, so I'm not yet sure how that part will play ou...

AC30-type Circuit with Channel Switched OD?
A few years ago I built Hoffman-style AC30 clone for a friend with a toroidal PT and a 40 watt Fender HRD OT. Details here: http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=27318&hilit=cheap+ac30 . I am now pondering making one for myself (TB channel) in a Princeton-sized chassis and a smaller cabinet...

Re: Fender AC power cord
If you want flexible you want rubber not PVC. Rubber used to be the standard but these days rubber cords are mostly only found on better power tools. Grainger has them, but sadly not in grey.

Re: Are tube amps living on borrowed time?
Sampling keyboards have not replaced pianos. Reduced the market? Yes, but no piano player would ever mistake one for the other. Modelers do what they are designed to do, which is emulate the sound of a miked amp. What they do not do IMO is sound like an amp in the room with you. On large stages the ...

Re: One stop shopping?
As for axial caps, from all I've read most of us should just move to using radials, as they're more common, way cheaper, and the nicer brands work perfectly for audio. People can confirm or deny these as quality, but from what I've heard/read, Panasonic, Nichicon, and Kemet are a few of the higher ...

Re: Panama amps
No direct experience but there are gutshots on the Web. Pretty much a Mesa mini rectifier clone, but with cheap PCB mounted pots and lots of fragile ribbon cables. Pretty much what you would expect for the price but if it were me I would pay a bit more for a used Mesa.

Re: [’65 DRRI] Reverb Driver + Tank
I suppose the question is what kind of improvement you are looking for? I doubt that a replacement reverb transformer would change much of anything, nor would changing cables. A different brand of reverb tank is more likely to produce a noticeable change but whether it's better or worse is hard to s...

This. I have had these exact symptoms before on an 18 watt build and it was just a soldering issue. Reflow everything then try it.M Fowler wrote:Sounds like bad solder connections.

Re: Monkeymatic NDS Reverb #2
I asked because I built a Tweaked D'Lite but have never loved the cleans on it. Something to get back to someday, but I have been much happier with the two Small Special variants I have done. I might take a crack at your version. Post cleepz!

Re: Monkeymatic NDS Reverb #2
Cool build. If you were after a D-based clean amp why did you take this route rather than doing a version of the Small Special?
