Merlin's heater wiring scheme.
I recall when I saw Merlin's recommended heater wire routing I thought it was even more difficult, fiddly and anal retentive than other schemes I had seen and rejected it outright. I have primarily done overhead heater wires which has the advantage of being able to procrastinate and leave heater wir...

Multiple filament windings and virtual center tap(s)
I am using an Antek toroidal PT with two non-center tapped 6.3v 3A windings. I plan to use one for the power tubes and one for the preamp tubes. I read elsewhere that an artificial center tap wasn't really necessary/useful for power tubes. Does that sound true? Or will I need to plan for two artific...

Re: I cannot resist
Yes they are 715P 800v. I got some .022s at 50 cents/ea. He had a few other values suitable for guitar amps but at that point I had to stop. I went in for wire and knobs. Wire and knobs. I can stop anytime I want . Really.

..the surplus parts Fairyland that is Apex Jr.
Driving back from a business meeting in LA my car was magically steered towards Apex Jr in Torrance. I had nothing to do with it. When I woke up these were in my trunk.

Re: New build advice
Re the choke's effect on amp characteristics this seems to indicate that it would tend to make the amp sag less. http://www.tonesecret.com/?p=1622 Since everything I find on the Internet is true, we can say that the choke input in combination with SS rectification will yield a very tight, even uptig...

Thanks. How would you describe the difference between your tonestack and the original?

Tweed Bluezmeister build
I'm trying a Tweed Bluezmeister build as per EL34World in a 16x6.5x2.5 chassis bent by a friend. I will use an Antek toriodal PT and a Hot Rod Deluxe OT. Other parts culled and ordered. A tight fit so I am trying mightily to avoid my usual spatial relationship fails. No problems so far, and I hear c...

Re: PSA: Cheep Heyboer iron on eBay
No affiliation - I just bought one for a Rocket build Me too ;) Thanks. They are almost gone y'all. The lower V ones at least. Actually they are gone. I guess that settles the question of whether I should buy a 2nd one. When I run across fire sales like this I like the bargains but I wonder ...

PSA: Cheep Heyboer iron on eBay
No affiliation - I just bought one for a Rocket build. The seller has some 280-0-280 and 337-0-337 Heyboer iron for cheap. The 280v was $32 shipped. He also has new 1 meg Alpha pots for 10/$6.00

Re: New D'Lite-ish 6V6 powered up, and making noise.
I had a similar issue with a Small Special build. Separating the PS grounds for the power amp and preamp filter caps did the trick in that case.

Well those are both unassailably true statements. They don't know, and they do think that.xtian wrote:Fun to watch, but a bit ridiculous on it's face, because they start out by saying, "we don't really know what a real Dumble sounds like, but we think they all sound different..."

Re: Hammond Chassis to TC15 Hummmmmm and questions
Back this this crazy-uncle in the attic build. I took Phil's suggestion of rerouting the OT wires to it's logical conclusion and ran them outside the chassis altogether. That took care of the oscillation issue which made it possible to ground C8 and put the 100K resistor back that I had removed. Spe...

Re: ac30 sounds grainy/fizzy
A 60-80 ohm cathode resistor will cool it down which may or may not address your fizz issue. You are biased hot but not that much hotter than AC30s run by design. They were made to eat tubes.
BTW what choke are you using?
