Were the capacitors themselves bad? Or was it just that Fender used the lower temperature 85Degree ones?

That master volume mod doesn't actually help, I did some tests on this a few years ago with a spectrum analyser and found it made no difference. But YMMV. Dave Friedman puts a 500pF cap across the cathode follower 100K, lowers the first coupling cap to .0022uF, adds a 22uF to the final stage cathode...

Is it just the treble control that has no effect? Do mid and bass work?

Yeah very little information out there regarding these am afraid Andy. I know Hogy from Komet built one but was only happy with it after much tweaking. I've never seen a schematic or gut shot.

Done a really nice job on that one! And great you've dialled it in to your liking now. All that's left to do is play....................or start planning the next build

Ah, found a way to listen. Yes sounds like instability or maybe a bad connection somewhere. Will have to see once you’ve finished rebuilding.

Only things jumping out in that pic are: - Your grounds, looks like you’re using the jack sockets as ground points. - Spare secondary is a bit close to the split wiring. - Maybe what appears to be your OT primary is very long. It’s normal to hear some sound without a speaker. I think it comes from the OT.

Use Silver Mica, don’t use Ceramic.

Yeah absolutely the divider reduces gain. You go from the Express configuration which is basically no divider allowing full signal through, to the Komet voltage divider that cuts signal almost in half. It would retain the cleanup if you changed the divider between the stages as well.
