Re: Voltage selector switch for Express power transformer?

You can use either a Marshall switch (if you're not bothered about Japanese and one of the European taps), although it is fairly large item. Otherwise you can go for any rotary switch that's rated for 240Vac and the current you'll need when running at 100V. I prefer to spec my PTs with a pair of 120...

Re: well that sucks. headphone trick issues

I made a little adaptor with a stereo 1/8" socket connected to two pieces of wire with alligator clips on the ends. One wire went to the shield and the other went to the tip and ring (left/right channels). Makes doing this really easy.

Re: well that sucks. headphone trick issues

does this sound ever get amplified? could i just hook an actual speaker cab up to the OT to determine how much hum is coming through. It may be a lot less than what i hear in a set of headphones. No, it won't get amplified. This will be a constant background level of hum even with the amp in standb...

Re: what's the purpose?

More importantly, if gives the grid on the first gain stage a reference to ground. Without that it'd be noisy as hell until that particular triode expired.

Re: well that sucks. headphone trick issues

Do you have enough lead length on the PT to rotate it by 90 degrees if you still bring the wires up through the same holes? Then try the OT back behind it and see how it goes.

Try also using the OT at 45 degrees, if you haven't already, which can help sometimes.

Re: liverpool very bright

Keep in mind that the volume, treble, and bass pots are all audio taper. If your treble pot is a linear when it's only on say half it will almost sound like it's wide open, very bright. All three of these pots should be audio taper. Other "mods" can help, but first get the pots right. Did your old ...

Re: Hum Dinger

This is an ancient tube problem. Most of the noise and buzz in preamp tubes can be significantly reduced by employing an adjustable virtual center tap. Fender's hum control actually works well when used properly. Problem is many turn it all the way one way and ground one side of the heater supply. ...

Re: Voltage Doubler / Heater Regulator

Reference your DC side to ground and leave the AC side alone. That is the quietest solution since it's the preamp tubes where noise gets in. The gain at the power tubes is too low to be affected, and in a push-pull amp you've got common-mode rejection anyway. I'd still go 6.3Vdc for the preamps thou...

Re: quick "headphone trick" question

Yes, you can. Just make sure you don't get shocked by anything. You can also do the headphone trick on the choke to find a location where the noise coupled into it from the PT is minimised. Just remember, though, that your choke will be able to couple some noise into the OT in theory so don't sit it...

Re: anyone use an IEC socket with integrated fuse? PN needed

i assume i need to use the 120v fuse though, even though it says use a 250v fuse. No, the current rating, rupture time (quick-blow, slow-blow, etc.) and physical size is all you are interested in. Fuses will generally be rated at 250V since this allows the same fuse to be sold in all markets. Same ...

Re: Non-Traditional 15 watt Liverpool with PCB

paulster... I think that is the power supply resistor on the inside of the front panel... the cathode resistor is on the board next to the electrolytic. Maybe that is what you meant though.Tony yes that's the power resistor.... which will get hot... and yes that is a plastic faceplate... Of course ...

Re: Non-Traditional 15 watt Liverpool with PCB

Neat job. Just one immediate observation is that I'd not have the output tube cathode resistor on the front panel when using a plastic control overlay as the heat will likely cause it to try to lift and you may end up with it looking a bit warped in time.

This is a great idea though.

Dish towels are your friend! You get better purchase on the chuck without killing your fingers in the process. They are about the perfect thickness for these plugs.

Re: Neutrik Silent Plugs

Get a SMD flux pen if you don't already have one (they're great), apply a little flux to the semi-circular piece and the cup, and then you can tin them very easily. Then it's a doddle to solder your cable to. The strain relief is so strong on the Neutrik connectors that you don't have to worry about...

As an aside, did Kirk's ever come back? It was stolen a few years ago along with a load of other Metallica gear and that's the last I remember hearing of it.
