Re: SRV Vibroverb real deal not reissue...tonequest report amp..

i changed the output transformer to the SRV oversized one from mercury magnetics and it sounds incredible. Better than the 2 ohm. very full. i also put all the ajax blue molded caps back in and .033 blues for the mids in the tonestack which sound so much better than the orange drops for me. orange d...

Re: best brand Super reverb output transformer for SRV tone?....

i installed the mercury magnetics super reverb toneclone OT with an 8 ohm tap and it sounds great. so much better than the classictone one.

it was twice as much but definitely worth it. the mercury magnetics OT actually has that blackface tone i was hoping for. distortion and cleans both sound good.

Re: SRV Vibroverb real deal not reissue...tonequest report amp..

dont go Classictone buddy! ive tried them and their distortion is crappy for a fender amp. spend the extra money for a better one and you'll be happy. hoffman is only a little more and their sound is alot better. Mercury magnetics costs twice as much but are worth it in my opinion. i wish someone ha...

Re: best brand Super reverb output transformer for SRV tone?....

the mercury transformer is exactly like the originals except they use nylon instead of paper. i ended up going with the mercury magnetics toneclone super reverb with an 8 ohm tap so we'll see how that sounds. i've used a silverface twin reverb OT in my own vibroverb clone and it rocks for SRV tone i...

Re: best brand Super reverb output transformer for SRV tone?....

thanks man, yeah i told him we'd probably go with mercury. its about 50 bucks extra than hoffman but in the end itll be worth it. im still wondering about hoffman transformers but so far mercury magnetics is the front runner. i wish i could find some pacific or schumacher trannys though, very hard t...

best brand Super reverb output transformer for SRV tone?....

im converting a 69 super reverb to a vibroverb for a client/friend of mine which ive done a few times. he wants one for the best SRV tone and i was wondering brand wise, which output transformer would sound the best? -8 ohm tap ive tried classictone and the distortion doesn't sound good in my opini...

Re: SRV Vibroverb real deal not reissue...tonequest report amp..

ok. cool martin. that makes sense and it sounds like you know what you're talking about. in any case, that reduction of the high end a bit does sound great playing chords at high volumes. but i still like the tone of the 68k input resistors for the individual notes

Re: SRV Vibroverb real deal not reissue...tonequest report amp..

I can build amps and do all maintenance and mods but I didn't go to engineering school or anything. if you think an explanation is wrong, elaborate. I just go off stuff Ive read & learned from others like a lot of people in amp garage

Re: SRV Vibroverb real deal not reissue...tonequest report amp..

that what I read in a interview with him "68k to 100k to lower input signal to keep the tone more controlled at high volumes." if that's not correct then what is "correct" just saying that's not correct doesn't say much. whether is correct or not it does make a noticeable difference in feel and tone...

Re: SRV Vibroverb real deal not reissue...tonequest report amp..

i made an edit to the topic. try changing the two input resistors from 68k to 100k too. this was one of cesar diaz mods that makes the amp sound more controlled. the sound doesnt get as over saturated and flubbed at higher volumes. it lowers the input signal sent to the tubes a bit and you really he...

Re: SRV Vibroverb real deal not reissue...tonequest report amp..

i think jazzguitargimp's post seems a pretty logical explanation. i read cesar diaz stating he used the super reverb OT's in the vibroverbs to give them more power, so that make sense to me.

Re: SRV Vibroverb real deal not reissue...tonequest report amp..

this way though i get to use my 1964 super reverb ot instead of getting a new production one. the sound is HUGE and much louder than if i was plugged into the 4-10s. its definently something you should try if you get the chance.

Re: SRV Vibroverb real deal not reissue...tonequest report amp..

yep i was referring to the 2 ohm '59 bassman or super reverb output tranny. before i did it i tried to find some discussion on it but couldnt find any so i thought id post my experience for anyone wanting to try it. 2 ohm is a big difference but it sounds fantastic. lots of saturation, sustain, and ...
