Re: Hiwatt dr-103 tone stack after preamp section

...every time your guitars signal gets passed thru a cap its phase get shifted, so this is a manipulation in and of tis self... Interesting information, thank you. I was wondering if that same thing applies to the "presence" knob. I mean, leaving apart the fact that cranking the presence knob would...

Re: Hiwatt dr-103 tone stack after preamp section

...if you have a axe that you like the sound of then backing down on the amps tone controls to get the sound you want only serves to choke the signal flow to use a non tech term and removes some touch and feel from the amps response! My tech agreed with that. Actually I tried to "tune" my amp with ...

Hiwatt dr-103 tone stack after preamp section

I sent my amp to a tech to be serviced. We were talking for a long time about different kind of amp circuits, and he suggested me trying to move the tone stack after the preamp section; that way It would be more "usable", (specially when cranking it). I like what the tonestack does on a "clean setti...

Re: Dr-103 Double-bias-mod chassis pots locations

Have you un bused the amps grounds? The stock wiring is neat as a pin, but does not make for least amount of 120 hz hum you can end up with ! Yeah, that´s what I thought... Maybe attaching a trimmer to a sort of board material piece, drilling holes on the sides for having screws attached to the cha...

Dr-103 Double-bias-mod chassis pots locations

I'm going to make the double bias mod to my hiwatt using a couple of 25k locking shaft pots like this one. http://www.mouser.es/ProductDetail/ETI-Systems/RV4NAYSD253A/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMtC25l1F4XBU3KpyHl37lHXZ57iua%252btESU%3d . I was thinking on locating the pots up on the chassis, just using the 2 rema...

Re: New Airbrake III

if you use half the resistance of a 100W resistor, then the rating must be reduced by half. It can only support 50W in that configuration. I only mentioned this because I thought you were trying to design the circuit to handle a higher power amplifier. Ok, the attenuator has been working very well....

Re: New Airbrake III

A technique Ken Fischer used to tell if his amps sounded good was to use ear protection muffs. The idea being you really hear what the amp sounds like at lower SPL. I had this very experience when building a Rocket, it sounded okay, but something wasn't quite right, with the ear muffs on it stank. ...

Re: New Airbrake III

I'm more inclined to go with VVR in an Express rather than a master volume or an airbrake. I know this isn't your situation, I'm just thinking out loud and giving you an idea of my perspective. Another way of reducing power that was unknown to me, jejeje. It is about reducing voltage for getting le...

Re: New Airbrake III

I have a Weber Mass at home and it just destroys the tone of my 18 watter, I also found it rolled the bass off my Boogie Mark 1 too. I've tried a Tom Holmz power soak many years ago and I found the tonal trade off too much for me. I find it is so useful, and sounds acceptable to me, but I got the i...

Re: New Airbrake III

I measured the tip and the ground of the input on each click with the speakers connected, so I can find out what the amp would see: For a 16 Ohms load (11,8 ohms actual reading) 1- (Full Bypass)- 11,8 ohms 2- (5,8 ohms) - 9,8 ohms 3- (10,8 ohms) - 8,5 ohms 4- (16 ohms) - 9,1 ohms 5- (19,8 ohms) - 9,...

Re: New Airbrake III

Ah ok. Well, the amp is a 100 watts one, but I'm using it with 2 tubes pulled. The original air-brake lay out used 2x100 watts tubullar resistors, (using the complete upper resistor), and the instructions says that is perfectly safe using it with a 100watts amp, (although for old el34 amps recommend...

Re: New Airbrake III

It appears there is quite a bit of confusion on this build. You should be aware that the max power rating on the wirewound resistor only applies if you use the whole resistor. When you slide the taps to lower resistance points, the power rating has to be derated as well. I´m following this schemati...

Re: New Airbrake III

Ok, already got mouser parts and It´s almost done, but although the lugs are at the right place, (6, 11 and 16 ohms), I didn´t do any general measurement yet. I heard that I need to measure with the the cabinet connected to the output of the attenuator, that way I could check what the amp would see...
