Re: VVR noise
Can you post a schematic? If the diode you're referring to is the one I'm thinking of then its there for over current protection and is not strictly speaking necessary. Its connected from one side of the current limiting/sense resistor to the gate of the mosfet. The way it works is, under zero load ...

Think I'd rather have the one made out of colored pencils:

Re: tube power for Modeler
You may want to consider having one additional gain stage. I don't know what level your modeler is putting out, but standard line level is 1.4v. A standard 12ax7 gain stage will have a gain of about 60, a LTP PI will have less than that. If you're using NFB you'll have even less, which you'll want t...

Re: Subtle circuit difference, massive difference in tone
This seems about right: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Df5m7H3Uo0Q/VSzQcAjqfWI/AAAAAAAA4i0/x96jxByoBNU/s1600/20131017-185320.jpg I moved the 470k/500p after the volume control. Seems my theory was correct. Though it didn't add as much low end as I anticipated, which is good as the amp has plenty now, may...

Re: Subtle circuit difference, massive difference in tone
I love the look of those big power triodes. They sound really nice as well. 400 pounds sounds about right lol. I'd love to build one around something like that one day, but in P-P. I think the SET guys are nuts lol. I've never seen anyone go to such lengths just to get a few watts of power. We had o...

Re: Subtle circuit difference, massive difference in tone
You'd only need about 2,000 of them :D At which point you wouldn't even the need the OT because the output impedance would be low enough to drive a speaker directly lmao. Edit: I couldn't help but run some numbers :P First the easy one, filament current: 1520A, which gives a power draw of 9576 watts...

Re: Subtle circuit difference, massive difference in tone
Lol. I think the main problem with mine was the plate voltage was too high and the OT from Edcor was probably intended more for Hifi than anything, but it was the only one I could find that wasn't super expensive. Not a lot of people building SE guitar amps in the 25 watt range. SE bass amp might be...

Re: Subtle circuit difference, massive difference in tone
Thanks!! I'm quite pleased with it now. For a while there I thought it was just gonna be an amp that didn't work well with my strat, not so anymore. It's nice to hear you enjoy my ramblings, I keep trying to get myself to write shorter posts and just get to the point, yet it always ends in a wall of...

Subtle circuit difference, massive difference in tone
So I finally got around to ordering a different OT for my 6v6 Marshall. Its the one I built a while back with a push/pull pot for 1959/2203 modes. I'd replaced the Hammond 125E in my 6v6 express with one from Allen Amps that was a bit beefier and liked the results. Tamed the highs a bit and added so...

Re: Sometimes I get bored....
That is a very nice looking layout Sluckley. I like the input switch option. Saves lots of space on jacks. What software do you use to do chassis layouts? Kicad is great for doing schematics and circuit boards but not so much for doing chassis and PTP layouts. Yours is looking great to Xtian, lookin...

Sometimes I get bored....
...and I start putting together schematics and ideas for builds that I have neither the time, nor the money (mostly the money) to actually build. So I thought I'd share them here, might provide some ideas (as if any of us are short on those  ) Upshot is I'm getting a lot faster with Kicad, if I...

Certainly! Nice to see my late night ramblings turned out to be coherent and useful. Sometimes I write a long stream of consciousness then go to bed and wake up the next morning wondering 'oh god what did I do this time'.

Re: 5E3 Compression?
5AR4/GZ34 heater current is actually a bit less than 5Y3, 1.9 vs 2.0A. Oops I must've been thinking of the 5U4. Its understandable you wouldn't want higher voltages, amps do tend to sound brighter and stiffer as you go up. I'm definitely a big fan of things being browned out a bit. However maybe st...
