Great!

Many thanks. I should quit being stubborn about asking for help. The link you provided looks like a wealth of good info. I'm definitely going to peruse that and maybe shamelessly plagiarize, so to speak.

EFFECTS LOOPS

Are there some examples (schematics) of amps with processor loops so I can see how they are done and get some guidance from? The basic amp sounds very good with the processor bypassed, cut out out of the circuit, but I'm having a lot of trouble with the loop

not bad

If budgetary constraints are an issue, I have a cool secret for you. There are, in many cases, 12-volt heater versions of great tubes. The 6V6 for example, is available as the 12V6. EXACT same tube, just takes a different heater voltage. Same with the 6SJ7. Look for the 12SJ7. Saves you money. Plus ...

forgot

If you watch c/l, often times people give away or practically give away those old organs that have been kicking around in grandma's basement. Oftentimes they (the owner) don't know a tube from a transistor. If you are near a big city, odds are you won't have to wait long and one will show up. Seattl...

Re: electrolytic measures good, acts bad?

Put a 100k resistor between the cap and the choke. Disconnect any load after the cap. Turn the amp on and measure the voltage drop across the resistor. It should take a moment or two to get near 0 volts. It should end up with less than a volt. This test will not hurt the rest of the amp even if the...

Re: electrolytic measures good, acts bad?

I used a capacitance meter. It seems to be pretty accurate, but doesn't do the leak test.

electrolytic measures good, acts bad?

Is it possible for an electrolytic to measure good but break down under high voltage? I have one that measures good, but when I inserted it in the circuit, i had a small lightning storm inside the 5U4. I took it out of the circuit and all was well. It comes after a pretty stiff inductor, and it's on...

Organs make great donors

I have picked up many amps out of tube type organs for cheap and they are excellent for conversion to guitar/musical instrument or stereo. The power transformers tend to be overkill for the application, they sometimes offer 2 choices for B+, 5, 6, and 12-volt heaters. the ones I have gotten were usu...

Re: Thanks Leo

So you like Mylar film? One of the articles (I think, can't remember for sure) trashed Mylar. And what were they trying to sell? Usually that kind of review comes from someone trying to flog their own whatever. Hey it's the internet, everybody has a friend for a minute then not, and nobody knows yo...

Thanks Leo

I was confused by that Teflon business. It seems there is more contradictory than confirmatory info regarding caps, just makes it frustrating trying to learn anything. Thank you for clearing that up. I just settled for plastic dielectric, metal film. I would like to try some PIO if they aren't price...

whose best

I had this article on caps and I lost it :( This is really a confusing topic. According to one article which seemed authoritative, PIO aint so great 'cause they are leaky. Then I find another that shows actual screen shots of tests and PIO bests the bunch! First article states polypropylene (Teflon)...
