Re: 6DJ8/ECC88 in Dumbleator Sounds good
So for optimizing a Dumbleator for use with +4dBU effects and mixers, lower impedance is going in the right direction. On the whole is this moving the right way?

Re: Non-NOS component choices
Bear, Can you clarify? Are you referring to Eric Johnson's SSS amp? Yep. I’ve been curious about that HAD quote since I saw it, degrading his SSS design with “cheap parts.” Gets a little with the comments EJ has made about his new “Virginia” sIg Strat replicating his original 54’s sassafras body—he...

Re: Non-NOS component choices
Any thoughts on getting the EJ “cheap parts” sound with either NOS or new parts? Not really kidding.

Re: New D style amp from VHT
Luckily for the handy man those snubbers are very easy to replace. Board construction make swapping resistors simple too; all wires are mounted from the top side, so cannot drop out of the eyelet. Looks like a very nice tweak platform. What surprises me most, I think, is the fact VHT makes a Dumble...

Re: A guy talks about his recent contact with HAD
B.B. liked the 85 watt Twin Reverbs, could cope with the 100 watters, and didn’t like the UL 135 watters. Those probably accounted for him finding the Lab Series amps. I seriously doubt he used the 68 Custom Twins often if at all. It was a brand new model in the year he died. I’m guessing his rider ...

Re: closest 6L6 circuit to 5E3-like tone?
A different animal, but for lower voltage, cathode biased 6L6Bs, I would look into the 5B6 Bassman, which isn't quite a 5E3 but is closer to that sort of amp than a 5F6A. The Little Walter amps that were in vogue a few years back were 5B6 based, and some folks here got into DIY-ing them, so some sea...

Re: Tweedle-D
Honestly, my best recollection of the phenomenon is from Weber stuff and standard folklore for tweeds and very early Marshalls. I forget the tech explanation except that isolating cathodes is the top mod to kill the interaction. The Tweedle is a modernized/improved 5E3, so more predictable behavior ...

Re: Tweedle-D
The isolated cathodes on the two input channels of the Tweedle should mean that you won't really get that 5E3 interactive volumes stuff. I figure the 5E3's spongier compression would also help with the fact that the lead input isn't much louder than the clean with that trick. Given that the Tweedle ...

Re: $10 Eminence speaker any good?
For these, you would figure throw them in some cheap or free pre-made box of vaguely Champ-ish dimension or bigger. 1/4" pine wine crates from your local liquor store, say. Open back so who cares about tuning as long as there's some front-to-back depth. Leave it trailer-chic unfinished or throw some...

Re: Triad Magnetics SP-118 Inductor
I thought the consensus view was that the SSS inductors are like male nipples--not functional, just aesthetic. If a group buy happens, the price isn't too dear, but is there really a thought that there is something we are missing from the right inductor or an undiscovered circuit change?

Re: Hybrid ODS rack preamp
A PT that'll cover two bottles and fit into a 1U case is nice. Last conventional one I knew was from Allen Amps and was discontinued. If you need more bottles, you can always use a pair of Hammond 229 semi-tortoidal flat-packs, one for B+, one for filaments. I'd like to see a bit higher B+ in any of...

Re: understanding the basic SSS circuit concept
IMO..This is the best method of mixing in the reverb, sometimes referred to as a "Tweed mixer". It does use 2 tubes for an extra gain stage and cathode follower to mix both dry and wet signals. Since the signal is mixed at the follower end there is little to no loading at the PI entrance :D . Both ...

Early and late style HW PI's
I've been rekindling the Hiwatt obsession since this weekend, looking at threads and staring at schematics. I see a lot of talk on both the early 70s DR schematics with the CF DC coupling the preamp to the phase inverter and the later 70s style where the triode is just giving a steady bias current t...

Re: A question for SSS Builders!
Thread resurrection out of interest for ToneMerc's test platform. I'm plotting out something similar for a steel chassis precut for three noval holes and two octals. I want a clean-ish pedal platform that can still do some preamp grind with a loop for rack effects. A Dumbleator is usually recommend ...
