Re: Amplified Nation Tolex Tutorial

Home Depot stopped carrying the H20 about six months ago, I cleared out a few stores...one of them actually gave me all their stock! They still sell the flammable stuff, but I would not recommend it. I now get it right from Wilsonart, who has a warehouse nearby. The water based cements are challeng...

installing grill cloth...

I installed some grill cloth on my speaker baffle last night. It's not bad, but I'd like it to be better. I'm going to do another baffle and have enough material left over to do it as opposed to redoing this one. I can live with this one, so I'll just do another and see if I can get it better. I'm u...

Re: amp chassis, unpunched

I had to click on the color to get the number to come up. Thanks for the link! I guess I'll give them a shot.

Re: amp chassis, unpunched

I have used some black nylon countersunk washers before but they were #10 and no problems to date. I was ordering at the same time I was posting so I have 100 1/4" coming and can send you a set (4) to try out when I get them. Na, I appreciate it, though. I'll just order a bag and see. If they look ...

Re: There's a new Randall Smith in town

According to the website, the hybrid master is patent-pending. The triangular speaker chamber is patented....and the first thing mentioned in product description.

Re: amp chassis, unpunched

Thanks! I have found some nylon washers online. I don't know what they look like or how durable they are, so I haven't pursued them.

have you used them?

Re: amp chassis, unpunched

Yup, I've used lots of Watts chassis, and I like them a lot. His have 1/4" nuts. Now I've grown to hate the 8/32 nuts used on other chassis--they bind and FUBAR too easily. I used a Watts chassis. It seems very nice. The 1/4 nuts are nice, but finding a black decorative washer that size is tough. A...

Re: There's a new Randall Smith in town

It's not my scale control, I just called it a 'pseudo scale control' in my book (I'm talking about the variable bias resistor for the LTP). The principle has been used in Mojave and other amps before. Wait, what am I saying? I invented it! It's a revolutionary new concept in amp design which comes ...

Re: There's a new Randall Smith in town

So Merlin's scale control combined with a standard master volume is patentable? I think he would be unable to defend it.

Re: Deluxe reverb build problems...could use some help.

Mark and Johnny, Thanks. I am happy with it, don't get me wrong. Some of these guys builds look like artwork....so that was the goal. I've done some tweaking and the wires are a little less straight than they were. Stevem, There is room, but there was never supposed to be. That was an accident. Ther...

Re: Deluxe reverb build problems...could use some help.

To this day whenever I am installing 1/2 watt or less resistors I always confirm the value first with my ohm meter, and my eyes for being 59 are still dam good! That extra 4 seconds can end up saving you 4 hours or more of beating yourself up and possible buying a bunch of new parts that in the end...

Re: Deluxe reverb build problems...could use some help.

That would appear to be the case. I honestly don't know how the amp still sounded pretty good except for the noise. I can only imagine conditions in which I have no idea how they came together to make it work...at least work with a noise I had to deal with. Or, tube amps are remarkably forgiving for...

Re: Deluxe reverb build problems...could use some help.

I got it fixed! The difference in yellow and orange in NOT a color! lol Instead of the bias range resistor being 10k, it was 100k. Embarrassingly, I looked over this half a dozen times while trying to track down the problem. A mental block...of course it was the right value! Ugh. Live and learn. Odd...

Re: Deluxe reverb build problems...could use some help.

Thanks Stevem. The inputs are good and as you say. One of the PI plate leads might be 3-4 inches in total length. I might can get it a little shorter, but it's nearly 3 inches straight to it. So, that might be an issue. Any solutions for that under that scenario? I'll try swapping the transformer le...

Re: Deluxe reverb build problems...could use some help.

I was just working on a deluxe reverb with high plate voltage 452 and my line is 125 also replaced the rectifier tube with a Ruby 5Y3 and voltage dropped to 408. Was great, the Ruby drops near 50 volts like a NOS 5Y3. Tried a GZ34 and a Sovetec 5Y3 and both had high plate voltage. Been using the Ru...
