Re: Help with Ampeg B15n diagnostics

After this winter, there are plenty of holes in the road getting patched. Maybe I can just pull up next to the tar truck and hold the can out the window for a fill-up. :)

Re: Help with Ampeg B15n diagnostics

Leo, Thanks for the tutorial on reusing the can. I may present that to the customer, although he already seems ok with buying a replacement from Fliptops. However I may revisit that if it saves him some money AND makes me a little extra AND I get some satisfaction from recycling! BTW I thought paraf...

Re: Help with Ampeg B15n diagnostics

Bad OT confirmed. One leg to CT is 138k . Looks like its $250 for a replacement that retains the original vibe. Any recommendations on a cheaper sub? MC has a Bassman with multiple taps I could use. I hate to drill holes in this classic amp though. I just suspect this particular customer is not goin...

Re: Help with Ampeg B15n diagnostics

Based on the excellent suggestions, it is looking grim for this OT. The bias is going way up on the tubes under load and the B+ is dropping. I will take measurements tonight on each leg to center tap and see what I get. I also read an interesting article by RG Keen on using a battery and neon bulb t...

Help with Ampeg B15n diagnostics

THis is the fixed biased one. It has very low power and sounds really muddy. I suspect the OT is going bad but not totally convinced. I pulled the 6L6s and when I put 4v AC on the 8 ohm speaker output I only read 29V on the primary . I would expect to get more than that. When I tried this with a DR ...

Re: How am i getting 100vAC on the heaters???

I don't understand how an isolated transformer winding (in the case of the heater) can develop a voltage to another part of the system. That it does, implies a return path. ALso I have to guess that the ac radiating from the heaters is modulating the DC in the signal, or there is capacitive coupling...

Re: JJ's ECC803 reliability?

I get a bad tube from CE every so often, but they are real good about sending replacements. Got a bad pre from ET once and they acted like that had never happened before, but did send me a replacement. Regarding hum, (in the D style amps anyway) JJ, Mullard RI, EH all hum in V1. The only new product...

High number of items back-ordered at Mouser

Bad news at Mouser today. These parts are out of stock. I have listed the PN, desc. and estimated date of availability for what I noticed was backordered or non-stocked. The worst is the .22 MPP. Looks like they are not stocking these anymore. I have notice the MPP line has been dwindling the last c...

Re: How to test an amp for 230v/240v operation?

I do have 220 in my shop but am a little hesitant to equate that with what you would find in Europe. And maybe it does not matter but our 220 is across 2 hot legs either of which can give you 110 to the neutral and then you have a separate ground. I don't think it is the same in the UK where you hav...

How to test an amp for 230v/240v operation?

I need a way to test my amp for 230/240v systems as it is going to the UK. What is the best way to do that in the US? This is when I wish I had the right step up transformer. Part 2) The PT I am using has a 220v and 240v tap. My voltage selector switch only has 2 positions (120 and ?) so I am thinki...

Re: How to best approach amp repair for a living...

If you're interested, I was just offered something from a company out of Norcross, GA that is looking for cloud experts, and willing to let them work full time remotely. Unfortunately, I had no exposure to Cloud programming. My experience is mostly with MS technology. Thanks, though. When I turned ...

Re: How to best approach amp repair for a living...

I had a shop for 10 years from 1985-1995, and made a meager living in a town of 500,000 with only one competitor. I was set up with ALL the amp companies and I was always busy,,,saw a lot of neat amps,..and for the most part I enjoyed it. But these days? To make a living you'll HAVE to do warranty ...

Re: How to best approach amp repair for a living...

Good advice so far. @Phil_S: book ordered. also thanks for mentioning "Billable" hours. It helps to be reminded that there are many hours you can't bill for and that you must factor that into the equation. I see the amp repair thing as very doable around here. There is some competition but I am good...
