Re: Advice/tips on a good 5E3 build

That 'farty sound'. It might surprise you to learn that Wes Montgomery's favorite recording amp was a tweed Deluxe with an Jensen P12N. This is according to Wolf Marshall. The other info I have on the subject comes from a conversation I had with Patrick at Mercury Magnetics. Yes, they did put an MM...

Re: JCM800 build

Was looking at a similar project for a friend a while back. He found Marstran makes pretty accurate replicas of the original drake transformers, pretty pricy though but if you want a "boutique" brand they seem to be doing really accurate Marshall stuff http://marstran.com/JTM45-100-JMP100%20TRANSFOR...

Re: Advice/tips on a good 5E3 build

IMO, to really make them sing, you want to get rid of the blocking distortion. IMO the amps sound and perform better like that, and they will also take pedals better. The downside is, if you like that Farty Neil Young sound, you kind of need that blocking distortion. 4:26 is a great example. That f...

Re: SSS002 build log

Took me a while to diagnose this hiss which showed at all positions of the high filter except fully clockwise... Turned out to be noise on b+. That was suppressed in that high filter position due to the 3000pF-to-ground engaged since it connects through to the plate of V1b. Reflowing the power boar...

Re: Recent Dumble pic

“Rebuilt?” What, two resistors and a new PT? The demanding and exacting nature of that work should not be understated, when his fingers wizz by the caps he can measure resistance of the relative air humidity and tell when it should be replaced. His x-ray vision probably detected the internal short ...

Re: Advice/tips on a good 5E3 build

Well, I'm not sure at all about the origin of the Neil Young sound but I couldn't resist the appeal of that wild grawl, so I'd be please with you to share the relevant informations here. I'd start with finding the right speaker and the model of the pickups he uses on his guitar, though. From hearin...

Re: Advice/tips on a good 5E3 build

If you split the cathodes of V1, several people appeared to like having a 680nF bypass cap on the normal channel. To answer your questions, there does not seem to be much need for a balanced V1 yet it shouldn't hurt either, and on my build I have been substituting the ground switch with a VVR pot. ...

Re: Advice/tips on a good 5E3 build

I run the 6.3v center tap to the output tubes cathode for DC. I also do not use the stock layout of the 5e3, but that is more for my own OCD and preferences. On my 5F1 I ran the center tap from the pilot light and grounded the pilot light to the chassis and soldered the resistors to the light socke...

Advice/tips on a good 5E3 build

I'm looking at doing a couple of 5E3 builds this summer, one 6V6 and another 6L6 Neil Young modified Deluxe. I'm looking for some tips on making it sing and lowering the noise floor as much as possible Few questions I have * Should the 12AX7 pre amp tube be balanced? * For the Neil Young mods I'm up...

Re: SSS002 build happiness

Checking in with a quick brief. Got one of the original #002 run and implemented the following changes: V1 LNFB lowered resistor changed from 1M to 100K Entrance to filters changed .01uf first and then the .001 network Reverb LNFB was already 100K in my build by chance Added reverse polarity protect...

Re: Ryan & Erwin's SSS #002 Madness

Yes i swapped the wires. Not on the transformer (the RCA plugs are located under the board and can't be reached once the board is in place) but on the reverb tank. I switched the coil wires. My only theory is that the powertransformer induces a magnetic field in the iron of the driver coil (this co...

Re: Anyone know a small machine shop?

where are you located? You might specify a material on the drawing, and specify how deep the threaded holes are, or if they are thru holes. Ah yes meant to say they are thru holes. I'm in Iceland but it's probably cheaper for me to get them made in the US and just pay for shipping. I think either a...

Anyone know a small machine shop?

Does anyone know of or have a small machine shop that could make me 20 pieces of these blocks with three threaded holes in them?

The major dimensions are flexible in case there's stock that closely matches them.

Any leads?

You'll need a 5VAC source for that.
Hmm it says 6.3VAC from the filaments is possible with a floating ground. Did I misunderstand something about the center tap there?
