Re: Dumble Cleans on Super Reverb
I was on the same quest a few years ago. I plugged in the Skyliner (if I Remember correctly) tone stack values into the Duncan tone stack calculator and was surprised to see the mid dip looked more like a tweed bassman than a typical blackface. The slope resistor value also seemed to flatten the bas...

Thanks 10thTx. That is the one I remembered. What an interesting idea.

Re: Switchable Volume and MV
I remember a thread on something like this over at Hoffman. It was like channel switching, but instead of two channels it was a relay that selected between two preamp gains. One was set low for clean, the other high for distortion. When the distortion pot was selected a pre-set master vol was also a...

Re: Strat player looking for a humbucking guitar
The Epiphone Elite and Elitist models are the MIJ Orville by Gibson guitars with cosmetic changes (the "tombstone" headstock shape) designed for the American market. You will save quite a bit on shipping over a Japan-market Greco, Epiphone, or Orville. The early ones were called elite, then the name...

Re: epiphone sheraton ii or gibson es-335
Josh, have you seen any Epiphone Elite or Elitist semi-hollowbody models? Reviewers have favorably compared the quality of these instruments to Gibson factory models, but most are no longer in production. Made in Japan at the Terada factory, these repro 335s, Rivieras and Sheratons can be found here...

Re: BB King in Home Hospice
I played a gig in the early 80s as the warm-up act for BB in a roadhouse in central Massachusetts. He mostly hung out on his bus, but we got to spend a little time with him. He was a very nice man. He had asked for two twin reverbs as the backline, one for him and the other for his rhythm guitarist....

Try a PA cab. Tweak for clean power. Don't overdrive the input. Should sound fine at practice volume, I would think.

Re: diode resistor master ?
We may never know unless martin or jamme61 is willing to remove the diodes to hear what happens to the sound, and so I respectfully ask that one try it and share the info! I remember hearing one of these back in the day and thinking that this was the first amp I had played through that still had a g...

Re: Maximum amount of negative feedback?!
Another question about negative feedback value; I hope this doesn't hijack the thread: The increase in negative feedback should also produce a reduction in the overall volume level of the amp, right? Do you have a general idea how many DBs are lost between the optimum of 100k and the minimum accepta...

Re: Starting a storefront
If you will fix solid state amps and do general electronic repair you will be providing a much needed service wherever you wind up. A music store that does lots of trade-ins is a good place to look for work; maybe you can find a shop that will trade space for service. Good luck!

Re: Talk About Shady...
Reeltarded has it scoped, I think: consignment piece has very little profit, lots of risk if the buyer is unhappy. It does seem strange that they won't take a credit card. They are probably afriaid that a customer that has lots of expertise will be difficult to please.

Re: Taming bass notes on 5E7 Bandmaster
I think firestorm has it: the tone stack! I called it up on the Duncan Tone Stack Calculator. The bass does need to be on 10 to simulate a standard graphic sweep, and the treble has a significant boost between 8.5 and 10. I think this is the problem: the mid dip is very steep and is centered on 1k, ...

Re: Taming bass notes on 5E7 Bandmaster
POWDOG, I started with a 500k grid stopper. I liked it but thought the amp began sounding a little too much like my long tailed pair Fenders. I tried 100k, but that didn't seem to do enough, so I went up another 100K. My amp has some other mods: no negative feedback and a TMB tone stack, so your mil...

Re: Taming bass notes on 5E7 Bandmaster
He is concerned about the tonal balance, not the farty looseness in the bass that these amps often have, right? Is his guitar a hollowbody with only a neck pickup? Those are pretty boomy anyway. I remember the jazz guys from Berklee (I worked at a music shop around the corner); they would always sta...
