Definitely agree that a guitar has a good impedance for the input stage
I was thinking maybe if the input transformer was small it would saturate easily and provide some sort of musical nonlinear distortion, but just spitballing really

Input transformer?
This might be a very stupid question, but I've been looking over schematics of studio gear just for fun, and I'll see something like a 600 to 60k ohm transformer on the input, going into a small grid stopper, into the grid of the first triode. Certainly pro studio gear is different from a guitar amp...

How much to charge for a mod?
Apologies if this is an inappropriate question to ask, but I have no idea and wanted to get some ideas. My friend wants me to convert his Fender PA 100 into a guitar amp. Something "80s hair metal sounding" which of course gives me some good ideas for the preamp. Pretty excited to do a mod like this...

Re: 300 watt output transformers
where are you playing that you need that much power? but i see several svt output transformers available. like $300-600 depending on how picky you are It would likely be for my friend, he plays in a metal band and he digs the blue line svt, mesa 400, and fender super bassman. I don't question it, I...

300 watt output transformers
Has anyone made a bass amp recently? I wish I could source a 300 watt output transformer for 6x KT88s in push-pull. I don't know if I have the skill to build one also, but it's definitely been on my list. The only one I've ever even seen is the Hammond 1650W, and it was out of stock. Anyone ever see...

Re: Basic layout question
I have the pcb split up into several sections now. Now I'm just concerned about one layout item: The proximity of the OT to the preamp tubes. How close can it be? I know the OT radiates EMF like crazy, and the lamination edges are "pointing" directly at the preamp tubes. (ie, the end bells are point...

Re: Basic layout question
Everything that can possibly be panel mount will be panel mount. I think you are both right, doing a monolithic board design is definitely the wrong way to go. It does not lend itself well to experimentation or replacement of sections. What if I want to replace just the preamp at some point? Etc. Th...

Re: New 50 BMG cabinet completed
Very clean, lovely wiring job! Sounds great too!
Have you fired a 50 BMG before? Extremely fun, I highly recommend it!

Basic layout question
I want to try doing an amp on a pcb. I've done a few turret amps, and once you start needing relays, things can get pretty annoying. 100 watt push pull. I have my layout divided roughly into regions: https://i.imgur.com/dzpKdxU.png I'm worried about three separate things. 1. Region 1: This is where ...

Re: Errors in Merlin's power supply book?
Heed the wizard's warning! Throw that book away and buy his hi-fi preamps book. I want to buy his hi-fi preamp book anyway, but seriously, the whole PS book has to be discarded? Gyrator can't be used? Reservoir cap advice is junk? Switching and fusing info is wrong? Bias supply is bad? All that inf...

Errors in Merlin's power supply book?
I bought this book years ago and loved it. I just noticed this recently on his website: "I've been getting a lot of mail about my power supplies book. I'm sorry to say I permanently removed it from print. It contained too many mistakes and typos, and it didn't match the style of my preamp books." Wh...

Re: How do you calculate the cathode current in a push pull class AB tetrode?
Firstly forget the 30W per tube thing, that’s completely irrelevant to the query. Merlin explains the process http://www.valvewizard.co.uk/pp.html So you need the OT primary impedance and the HT voltage at full load. As it’s a guitar amp it has to accommodate being heavily overdriven, ie putting ou...

How do you calculate the cathode current in a push pull class AB tetrode?
Assuming you have 4x6L6s in a 120 watt amp, that is 30 watts per tube. A "dumb" calculation by me would say ok the B+ is 500V, that means 30/500 = 60 mA. This obviously isn't correct, as the B+ will sag at full power, and of course the screens draw some current also and they are at a lower voltage, ...

Re: Mute switch
If you want to put in a mute switch in install one in your guitar if it's not active such that it shorts out the signal just like the switching input jacks do in our amps. What if someone else needs to use my amp? (Which happens time to time!) I would prefer something more universal :) also this fo...
