Re: New Project

Years ago Mat in Finland posted a SE ODS with no "phase inverter." By all accounts it sounded great As an FYI, several of us on the Hoffman forum followed Mat's build and listened to his fantastic sound clips .................. and then tried building his SE amp using 6L6's. It didn't come close to...

Hey, thanks for posting that! It sounds mighty good to me. Superb tone, IMO.

Re: There are 35 Dumble type pedals out there...

I will simply trust that this is an excellent pedal. Having said that, both videos on the website have the pedal going into a Dumble style amp while claiming the pedal sounds like a Dumble amp. :? In addition to that, the 2nd video looks like a loaded up pedal board going into a Dumble style amp. My...

Re: Guitar Gallery Thread! Post 'em up!

Here are a couple I built from a kit. The amber burst is mine.

And the inexpensive Grote "jazz" guitar w/P90 is what I've been playing the most lately.

Any chance you have a video that is not FaceBook but maybe YouTube or something like that? Some of us don't do FaceBook.

Not the model schematic you're looking for but perhaps some clues that might be of help?

Re: Pentode vs Cathode follower for compression

I've done 12A_7 triodes with both tube and mosfet cathode followers. They have offered some nice compression and smooth tone if dialed in right. I've done 5879 pentodes, 6AU6, and 5654 pentodes. I like all of them but the 5879 is my favorite. I think it gives a FAT tone but my experience is that it ...

Re: Tweed overdrive special - some guidance needed

I think the clean on your TOS sounds beautiful! Super nice job! I also like the OD channel. You were getting some cool "vowel" almost "notched wah" tones in there at times with your OD. :D Enjoyed your playing also! Sounded great to me. I'd be very happy with a tone like that and view the amp as a s...

Re: Tweed overdrive special - some guidance needed

A few thoughts about the Tweed Overdrive Special ............... I've always thought of this as an amp to build and then change to personal taste in tone. So if you experiment I would do small changes and do them ONE at a time. Then play it that way for a few hrs or days and then decide what to keep...

Re: Tweed overdrive special - some guidance needed

The OD Channel just sounds bad, its shrill and has no bottom end at all. The Tweed Overdrive Special "OD" should sound something like this: https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=9488477 and this: https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11332809 Did you note on the original schematic that V2 is a 12AY7? Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems

Still having problems with the overdrive channel. Most recent changes are efforts to remedy excessive gain and fizzy/fuzzy top end. I don't think I have too much gain. Which is it? I'm confused .............. I thought you said you had excessive gain?? My opinion is the fizzy/fuzzy top with excessi...

Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems

My best guess is you have way too much bass and way too much gain?? If I were trying to mod your amp to something I would like ................ this would be my starting point to consider. 1) lower gain 2) lower some values of caps 3) add smoothing caps The amp in this soundclip has a 5751 with a ca...

Re: Lowering power output

Over the years of amp building, I've become quite fond of the 6BM8 tube. The amp I play the most at home and at open mics is the 6BM8 "The Minimalist amp". The solo on this was played on The Minimalist. https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=14391017 Sometime back, I drew up the Tweed BluezMeister idea...
