Re: Need help tweeking a schematic for 6k6 amp
Ok I think I got everything. Yes I also think its best to have individual bias pots, its not that much more work. I will also add in the extra fuse as suggested. Just want to clarify on the OT. I could get the Hammond 1760H (deluxe reverb) which is 20 watts, 6600 ohms with 4-8-16 ohm taps. For flexi...

Re: Need help tweeking a schematic for 6k6 amp
So assuming I can use both transformers I have on hand. I edited the schematic with all mentioned changes. Most notably B+ filter caps and dropping resistors and switching to full wave bridge rectifier. Does everything here look ok for a starting point? We talked about later maybe going more drastic...

Re: Need help tweeking a schematic for 6k6 amp
@brewdude thanks for this info, for now I'm leaning towards SS rectifier (at least until I hear what it sounds like) though I realize tube rectifier would lower my voltages and open up different doors. @cdemike, when you mentioned 261M6 I thought why do I recognize that part#? Sure enough I went and...

Re: Need help tweeking a schematic for 6k6 amp
"What's the rationale for lowering the output section grid stoppers" I mis-read your first post, I see now you were referring to B+ string, you want instead of 22k-10k-10k something like 10k-4.7k-4.7k for dropping resistors correct? And 275-0-275 is probably still too much, you think 250-0-250 is go...

Re: Need help tweeking a schematic for 6k6 amp
Yes, I should have clarified that I have no intention of trying to run the 6k6's on 6v6 voltages. I think if I remember right 315v is the max? Sound wise I would prefer plexi style 50w/100w EL34, but lower volume obviously. I understand normally EL84 is a good choice when trying to downsize from EL3...

Need help tweeking a schematic for 6k6 amp
For my next project I want to build a push pull 6k6 amp, this will get me pretty close to my target of 10 watts output. My plan is to have a plexi style preamp. I found this schematic (see attached) on Mr. Huss' page which I think could be a good starting point, but I need help converting the power ...

Re: What is this sound?
Thanks everyone for the ideas. I spent about 30 minutes with the amp this weekend, just chopsticking around. I got a loud pop when pushing on one of the V3 tube socket pins, the solder joint was fine but the claws that wrap around the tube pin itself (when you insert the tube into the socket) I thin...

Re: What is this sound?
Yes, Sorry, that would be helpful. see pics IMG_0930.JPG IMG_0929.JPG IMG_0928.JPG IMG_0927.JPG IMG_0926.JPG New build, 50 watt Hiwatt clone, this is the fourth time I've built this amp (I keep selling them so I can build another :D ) This particular build has been a bit of nightmare, I spent over a...

What is this sound?
test.mp3 Conditions: Amp volumes are turned all the way down, no guitar is plugged in, no hum and noise while the amp is in standby mode. Troubleshooting thus far is just replacing tubes one by one with known good tubes, noise persisted. I would say I'm 97% sure grounding scheme is not the issue. I...

Re: Update my power tube knowledge
One last thing, TubeDepot did send back a new JJ EL34 that measured 35mA, obviously a much stronger tube. 5 stars on their customer service.

Re: Update my power tube knowledge
Just got back from a mini-vacation, 4 kids screaming at each other and now I need a vacation after my vacation :? Steve, in reference to the Hickok, I got the tester a couple years ago from someone who works on these, claimed to be fully calibrated and ready to go. I have not calibrated it since but...

Re: Update my power tube knowledge
Thanks Steve, Thanks for the tip on heater voltage, this had never occurred to me. And just to clarify you are not using an external power supply (other than the tester) for the heater voltage correct? You are just watching the meter so as to fill in the gaps about differences between tubes. And no ...

Re: Update my power tube knowledge
Thanks Mark, So then those 6CA7 measurements mean about as much as my KT77 measurements  So what I want to do is use my pair of Mullard XF2's for this, knowing most of the other old stock tubes are in the mid 30 mA range, do you have any feelings on using the one that measured 19mA, too weak? ...

Update my power tube knowledge
I'm going thru my pile of old tubes with the goal of determining the life and strength of what I have, many of them are EL34's probably about 20 or so. It is mostly old stuff I've collected off ebay over the last 10-15 years. I checked them all with my Hickok 600A this week, they test in the "good" ...
