Re: Illinois brand capacitors still bad?

I have one of those cheap cap checkers (different brand) and I wonder if the measured value is similar when the cap is in circuit with high.voltage on the plates. The caps were measured out of circuit. I tried to make it as accurate as possible. Sorry I wasn't clear Mark. I meant after they were un...

Re: Does a 'bright cap' really boost highs?

Ha, thats great Max. I have from time to time imagined electron flow in strange analogous ways to give some visual to the actions. "But, to truly know the electron, you must "Be" the electron" - Bruce B+ Semi-sincerely yours, Phil D. To truly know the electron you must know quarks, quantum chromody...

Re: Illinois brand capacitors still bad?

Were they fresh off the shelf, or after some time under voltage to form the dielectric?

That is one hellified heatsink! With a fan across it, it should create frost on your FET.

Re: Hypothetical Amp Discussion

It looks like you have some soldering experience. A Champ is an easy build, but you might not really use it for much more than a training tool. A Deluxe might be of more use. It has a little more complexity. It might be a good starter for you as the circuit is push pull, like the amp you will finall...

Keep us posted on progress. And on the baritone also. I've had an interest in those and think my big hands need a vacation on the broad plank of a bari.

Or separate pre and power chassis. I did a stereo pre (originally for my Betterbacker) and coupled it with a stereo KT66 power amp for my T. V.

Never mind Phil. I see from your other post this must fit in a Twin combo cabinet.

Re: Hypothetical Amp Discussion

One tube per effects loop. Maybe half a tube, if you can steal the drive signal from the signal chain. . And if using a 6AW8 It's the only tube needed for both reverb drive and recovery. Anything can be done. To pull it off though you'll need a bit of experience. Have you built much, and have extens...

Re: Bad power?

What gauge is the 100 yd. Wire? And does it power lights, heat or air conditioning also? You may have only 85 volts due to IR losses.

Re: Two 20 watt amps in one chassis - layout/grounding

Phil you can have centered vol controls. Just have the input stages on each end. Your volume controls will be after several gain stages anyway so they're at line level now. Using shielded cable you should still get low hum.

Re: HILGEN BASSO 2501 Bass Amp Help Needed....

Yes, with 3 stages feeding your splitter you can get enough gain to satisfy. See if your tech is up for the challenge. Of course after he has verified correct operation as it sits. He could find degraded parts and their replacement might make it sound to your liking.

Re: HILGEN BASSO 2591 Bass Amp Help Needed....

I'd also cut C8 down progressively.
Reduce C9 and C10 to 22nF.
But for what you want I'd redesign it to a single channel to add your gain stages.

Re: Two 20 watt amps in one chassis - layout/grounding

Best to build them as parallel pairs that share no components. Though a beefy supply well controlled should supply the power needed with little interaction. I would build them as mirror images of each other with the power supplies in the center of the chassis. The inputs on each end.

When she fired up the tubes the camera overload looked like she achieved fusion!
How about the fine pitch on those grid wires.
