Re: Express/ Liverpool Cold Clipping Mod

Just finished the 5U4GB / 2 x 6L6GC 1x 15 Alnico version .... this one has the 50's tweed 5D5 Paraphase PI , It had to change the NFB from 1M (original Fender value) to 100k . Also I used a 15k bias resistor on the V2A Cathode and added a 2.2uf bias cap where as Mr F used 10k and no cap, The more ef...

Re: Express/ Liverpool Cold Clipping Mod

but your experiments are bossy! What does that mean ? Who have I been bossy with ? Examples please I think he is implying your efforts are (as the kids these days say) "like a boss", meaning, in full command of. It's Reeltarded for a compliment! :) 8) Great looking amp! Never heard that saying befo...

Re: Express/ Liverpool Cold Clipping Mod

Sensational looking cab. You build that cab? I imagine the gain really increases the closer it gets to 1.5K, how stable is the amp with increase in gain? Yes I built the cab, It's Queensland Swamp Mahogany like the Barwatts cabs I've built ... I build the whole thing , Cab , chassis, boards etc all...

Re: Who still makes great hardwood cabs for Trainwreck amps?

I built my own cab for my Barwatts cab, I'm also building one for a customer of Barry's I have a large stash of Queensland Swamp Mahogany , It's old growth wood that was felled only property , I also have Takllowood but no maple sorry . Here's some examples of my stuff, B07A65E9-4C21-416B-B274-4E7BE...

Re: Express/ Liverpool Cold Clipping Mod

A pot is better - I have that in a k50ish preamp. you need not go lower than 2k2 or 1k8 really Great Idea .... I've found a 20kB pot in my stash to try, I turned it into a variable resistor and put a 1.5k in series , I'm getting 1.5k off and 22k on full , More than enough gain and sustain than I'll...

Express/ Liverpool Cold Clipping

Hi Folks I've built myself a Two Knob Express preamp and married it to a 5E3 deluxe cathodyne PI and output section, housed in Swamp Mahogany TV Front style cabinet. I was looking for something smaller in wattage and volume to take to small gigs / rehearsals etc , my Express clone is a little too mu...

Re: A Trainwreck-Style two-knobs amp (just in the cradle)

47K seems a bit low to me, I would put a 500K pot in there and see what happens. I suspect 150K is about right, but how will you know what right is unless you go too far? I went 1M linear , but it changed the feel too much , lost something , didn't increase gain or drive so I went back to 100k , th...

I like the idea, might try 150k resistor and play with the pot value

Re: A Trainwreck-Style two-knobs amp (just in the cradle)

So I did a bit of experimenting and have found the settings I like , Kens original 150k is pretty much spot on (of course he got it right) . When turning down the guitars volume it stays clear and doesn't lose the top end , the gain is very cool, not fizzy but a great crunchy overdrive , more than e...

Re: A Trainwreck-Style two-knobs amp (just in the cradle)

Screen Shot 2023-04-17 at 9.40.57 am.png Hi all, I'm curious as to how much this resistor and its value changes the gain/saturation feeding the phase inverter . I've noticed Gordon has it at 47k (I did the pot adjustment version) Looking at Francesca and Kelly , Ken used 150k , in some recommended ...

Re: A Trainwreck-Style two-knobs amp (just in the cradle)

Finished the amp yesterday, sounds fantastic straight outta the box, I went with the 5E3 Cathodyne PI , I think it adds to the gain structure , I added a 470k resistor to balance the PI as well and a VVR . Went with the pot in the gain section instead of the resistor, it's subtle but definitely ther...

Re: Blues Deluxe to ODS build

Update : I think I've found my ODS version , I put #124 Skyliner values in and that's the sound I was expecting in my head . Huge Fender style cleans , and nice bluesy overdrive , crunchy with great sustain and pick attack, but not too fuzzy . This will be my gigging amp I feel ... Still waiting on ...
