Re: sugestions for next build - super clean amp

Check out Dr. Z's Stang Ray - one of the most beautiful clean tones I have ever experienced - very Brad Paisley like. I built one with 6V6 power tubes. Not very loud but what clean tone. Couple this with a pair of KT88 tubes and a paraphase drive stage and you should have one loud clean tone monster...

Re: Any Naylor Superdrive love?

Say Bob, the 22uf on the presence pot, its an elytic right? Was a bit confused with the handdrawn schems ive seen, he symbols across the board are for bipolars. Found some chassis pics, and sure enough looks to be an elytic on the presence pot. Im gonna try this out on my express, see what happens....

Re: Any Naylor Superdrive love?

I would consider using two separate gain controls instead of the dual pot. That would make it more flexible. You still can adjust them to the same knob position.

You will probably still have to compromise if you were to switch between modes during play.

Re: Taming The Caswell #39

The signal coming out of the first gain stage (clean) is 5VAC which is fine. The signal coming out of the second gain stage (O/D) is 10VAC without the cathode bypass cap and it's 35VAC with the cap. The signal coming out of the third gain stage (Extreme O/D) is 65VAC without the second stage bypass...

Re: Any Naylor Superdrive love?

the cool presence circuit (which I have tried) When I put this circuit for discussion in another forum I got the response that this could not work - the amp would oscillate. No particular reason given however. What was your experience, do you still use this circuit and if not, what did you replace ...

Re: Spitfire vs Marshall 18 watt

The tone controls in the 18W are different, too - both in the Normal and in the Trem channels.

Just build it - it's easy to convert one into the other by just swapping some part values.

Re: 86ing it: Ef'ing up my amp

I am making a parts list to rebuild a JTM 45 Tremolo into a straight JMP 50 with a switchable Ef86 stage in the middle of V2 at the entry of the CF. The Ef gets it's own drive control, and something of a tone shaper, like the 6-pos control in the brown note layout of the foxy 18. On paper, it seems...

Re: Favorite pentode circuits

Built two versions of the HoSo, both with the 5879. I also built an amp based on the Stang Ray but with 6V6s in the power amp. I used an EF86 in that one.

I guess pretty much so. At least that's what it was modeled after.

It seems I am the only one who never had a tube rectifier fail but had two shorted SS rectifiers. So much on the myth that SS rectifiers are more reliable.

Re: Naylor Presence circuit

I asked a similar question in a German tube amp forum and got the comment "not a good idea - it's bound to oscillate." I have never played a Naylor though and have not tried this circuit.

Re: 220k & 100K resistor not on Dockery Schematic

OK I see that Ceriatone has the 220k and the 100k resistor. Also I see that the AC30 has the 220K resistor. So I am going with the 220K and 100k resistor, just like Trinity and Ceriatone (and the older schematics). I bet that that 220k/100k voltage divider's primary function in the DC-30 was to pro...

Re: Matchless Style build

You could build the Hot Cat with 6L6s - 2 x 0.9A = 1.8A plus 4 x 0.3A = 1.2A, totalling 3.0A for the heaters. With EL34s you would be at 2 x 1.5A = 3.0A plus 4 x 0.3A = 1.2A, totalling 4.2A and still within the limit for heater current. Have you ever played a Hot Cat? It has a very specific sound, d...

Re: Rocket with normal & ef86 channel and tremolo.

Well it looks to me that the channels are opposite phased. If I understood the schematics correctly the Rocket preamp is in phase with the incoming signal. And the RT66 preamp is out of phase with the incoming signal. Just one gain stage and signal taken from the plate. I might then be able hook up...
