Re: Grid stopper matching?

CC is the best to use in that place because of non-inductance, good RF properties, so just replace for new cc's one day how about resistive hiss? wouldn't CC grid resistors in the first preamp gain stages add unnecessary hiss? Yes. CC Resistors are worst regarding hiss (thermal noise, resistive noi...

Re: Replacing a tube rectifier with solid state?

… To stabilize the bias voltage I used a Z-diode. https://ampgarage.com/forum/download/file.php?id=72380&mode=view … I can’t see a zener in the bias supply? Anyway, my thinking is that it’d be a bad idea to regulate the bias voltage. It seems better to allow the bias and HT supplies to track the ma...

Re: Replacing a tube rectifier with solid state?

I really didn't mean my comment as an attack or in any way with a negative intention!
Please don't forget that English is not my mother tongue, I don't want to come across as negative, but maybe I don't always have the right intonation.
Sorry if that was the impression!

Re: Replacing a tube rectifier with solid state?

yes, changes in the circuit do change something! But using diodes instead of tubes makes life easier and … less expensive  The question for me is only : Am I or the person I make the Amp for is satisfied with the result ? To 100% copy isn‘t possible anyway and for me not desirable, I add my per...

Re: Replacing a tube rectifier with solid state?

Hi Wyatt, in my Bassman 5f6 I have also replaced the rectifier tube. I used 120 Ohm in series with each rectifier diode. The inductor TR2 was replaced by a resistor of 220 Ohm. The first filter capactior after the diodes has 100uF instead of 20uF. To stabilize the bias voltage I used a Z-diode. http...

great!
now you can eradicate the HF, have you experimented with a gridstopper?

Re: Earthing and lead dress

I fully agree to the above. In this case we also have HF oscillating. Now next to the resistance of wires we have to think about their inductance. (and also their capacitances) The inductances can build a resonance with capacitances in the circuit. The tubes themselves have internal capacitances. To...

Re: Earthing and lead dress

Hi Mark, for a proven ground and earth wiring have a look here : https://ampgarage.com/forum/download/file.php?id=72381&mode=view All black wires are ground wires. There are three ground points : 1) left side the ground next to the stacked capacitors. All grounds of the power supply capacitors are c...

Re: First Amp Build

Hi, I agree somwhat to alnight because I don‘t know your building skills, but it seems to be an interesting project to start. My first builds were similar, an old cabinet (fan heater) and a simple class-A amp… IMG_1017.jpeg IMG_1018.jpeg The hi-fi box looks nice, I would replace the 10“ speaker with...

Re: Bassman Chassis 1959 - What is under the hood ?

the wiring is done. Circuit is more or less original, the changes can be seen in the final schematics below. No hum at all, only some hiss when the Volume is fully on. The main change is the replacement of the rectifier tube. To adjust the voltages behind the diode rectifier, a 120 Ohm resistor is i...

ofcourse we can do, with some wine and beer will be a lot of discussion  there was in Croatia Triode festival every year, HiFI stuff and some guitar , but after 2021 there was no any. Maybe this year will be again, there are rumors, somewhere in Dalmatia.. …please let me know when it happe...

Re: Bassman Chassis 1959 - What is under the hood ?

Hello Bepone, thank you for your views. I don't agree with you on all points, but I think we agree that building tube amplifiers is a kind of art. This is my interpretation of the Bassman, close to the original, but changes that are acceptable to me and keep the basic character. I've been building t...

Re: Bassman Chassis 1959 - What is under the hood ?

the build has started… I eliminated the Doghouse and place the capacitors where it makes the most sense electrically.
The rectifier tube is replaced by diodes, and the smoothing inductor is omitted.
