thank you, I‘ll try that values. When I‘m done with this build, I‘ll post the sound samples of both versions…

Re: Bassman Chassis 1959 - What is under the hood ?

thanks Traynor, I will start with this circuit diagram. (see below) IMG_0960.jpeg If you have links to other versions, I would be grateful for them. I meanwhile believe that there is no such thing as "the" tone, as can be seen from the fact that the voltages in the circuit diagram are specified as +...

Re: Bassman Chassis 1959 - What is under the hood ?

thank you all for the answers! So no „hidden secret“ is there… I‘ll build my own chassis, big enough to place all into it. (as one of my idols said: „Form follows function“). I want the sound, not the appearance. If it's in keeping with the era, I'm happy to make compromises. For example, I almost o...

Bassman Chassis 1959 - What is under the hood ?

Hello folks,
I'm currently planning my next project. It's going to be a Bassman 5F6-A.
I have now discovered pictures where there is a metal cover on the top of the chassis. My question: What is under the hood?

Re: First amp build questions

as said above, try it out. Don‘t UNderheat, slightly overheat is ok. In some designs they specified 6,5V as normal heater voltage (e.g. some Dynacord designs), and then assume that the mains voltage is +-10%… so it‘s not that critical. Someone mentioned that the transformer you want to use is oversi...

Re: First amp build questions

Achtung, your heater supply will deliver around 9V, its again the RMS vs. peak thing. Split the capacitor and place a suitable resistor between the both. First guess is around 15ohm, 6W Regarding DC+ I think you can save the Inductor L1 and split R21 : first directly behind the rectifier, second bet...

Re: How to Determine if a Tube is Microphonic?

My wife worked in a store that sells and selected tubes. The microphonics test consisted of exactly what you do: tapping the tube with your fingernail. This made the tube much more expensive  There were no real measurements, only the hearing of the tester.

Build finished, defeated the hum

I like to build amps from scratch. Sometimes „historic“ amp schematics are used ( next will be the Bassman 5F6 ), sometimes those are used as inspiration and starting point, and sometimes everything starts from a white sheet of paper. This one gave me a real hard time because of bad 50Hz hum. It cam...

Re: AB763 circuits - cathode bypass caps that are 47uf/100v.

you may put two 47u in series, than you have half the value as a result - 23,5u. That would be electrically no problem and gives you the original behaviour of the circuit. The only problem may be the space you have…

regarding the hiss: It seems that you are using carbon resistors, metaloxide or -film have much lower hiss (noise)
There are also tubes that are better or worse…

Re: Simple passive output attenuator design questions

should work, but what the sound is like has to be tested… You can avoid the expensive 100W pot by using parallel resistors, because when you want to play not so loud, a few Watt (say 1…5W) are enough for your livingroom. For understanding what I mean look at this : https://www.fingers-welt.de/phpBB/...
