Re: HILGEN BASSO 2591 Bass Amp Help Needed....

first thing I would do is halving the capacitances C1, C2, C3, C5 and check if the sound goes in the right direction.
Then playing around with different combinations.

Could you please share the supply voltages A, B, C, D ?

Re: Does anyone recognize this amp design?

I would say its a homebrew, with some later modifications maybe from the seventies if I look at the components.

Re: Thick film power supply dropping resistor?

From a electrical point of view, the resistor is ok, but it's like throwing caviar into a pig trough. As long as you make sure that the power specification is not exceeded (pay attention to the derating per ambient temperature) you can use any resistor. But the smaller the design, the higher the sur...

Re: Flash seen from bottom of 12AT7 PI socket

Because of the flash I power up my amps through a current limiter on the primary side, between the wall socket and the amplifier power cord. That also helps the input fuse and the input rectifiers and powers up everything including the anode voltages in a smooth manner… I don‘t know if all values of...

Re: Cabinet made of OSB instead of pine

thank you all for your thoughts.
I think I will not use OSB, the possible desintegration because of use/vibration really seems to be an issue…

Re: Cabinet made of OSB instead of pine

I planned to use 18mm thick.
the joints are glued and screwed together with a triangular strip inside as reinforcement

Cabinet made of OSB instead of pine

I would like to build a Fender Bassman cabinet with 4 x 10" speakers. Keep to the original dimensions, but would prefer to use OSB boards (Beaver puke) instead of pine. (these very coarse chipboards e.g. https://www.obi.de/p/5799762/osb-3-verlegeplatte-22-mm-mit-nut-und-feder-205-cm-x-62-5-cm ) Does...

look at reichelt.de… they offer some in TO-92 package, real cheap enough to try some of them if they suit your taste…
Search for „jfet“ on their site, than narrow down to „N“ type

Re: #002 Steel String Singer - almost there

a cheap way to protect the OT against secondary open condition is a MOV (metal oxyd varistor) just solder it directly over one of the output windings. and what about this simplicity, R=47R 5W permanently soldered to the output jack? :P you lose always power...and heat the atmosphere  the M...

a cheap way to protect the OT against secondary open condition is a MOV (metal oxyd varistor) just solder it directly over one of the output windings. The rated voltage approx. 2x the highest expected output voltage. They look like a disk with about 15…20mm diameter. The good thing with this MOVs: w...

Re: I'm jumping ship.

Well, modern times have now left their mark here too... For me, these digital amplifiers are like a vegan soy schnitzel, somehow reasonable but also not the real thing... Professionally I am also on the silicon and processor side, for me the tube amplifiers (which are actually the opposite of reason...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

in that cases a class 1 ceramic is the right choice. (if you don’t want that distortion) They do not have this large voltage dependency on capacitance. I‘m pretty sure that the picture shows not a class 1 ceramic cap. If you want to compare film cap with ceramic cap for audible application, it shoul...
