Re: Please help me choose a Strat style guitar
Tom, Markus, I had a luthier, Peter Stephen, build it because not only have I played nylon as career for over 20 years and wanted a wide neck; but because I believe in supporting good craftsmen, unique things and enjoy projects such as winding the PUps and getting involved in the design process. Yes...

Re: Please help me choose a Strat style guitar
Find a luthier you trust and a lumber yard, pick your own timber, wind your own PUps, specify your own neck profile etc.

Re: Can a 12AT7 sound similar to a 5751 ?
Forgive a dumb question - what needs to be done to supply more current if the PT is up to it ....change the dropping string resistors to a lower value ? You are still only talking 7 to 10mA per triode or so for the AT. The AX7 drawing about 1ma per triode. But in the preamp string this extra draw m...

Re: 5F6A - strange parasitic?
FWIW it doesn't matter if the screen is at the same voltage as the plate because the screen grid has such a small target area compared to the plate, that most of the electrons hit the plate (and not the screen) anyway. The few that hit the screen merely contribute to the relatively small screen cur...

Re: Tube theory confusion
It's called Ohm's law, those electrons flow though both the anode and cathode loads.nee wrote:Okey-dokey, so if the electrons really are being attracted from ground towards the B+, how does the PI on the 5E3 work, with signal being sent to the power tubes from both anode and cathode?

Re: Tube theory confusion
This stuff always gives me a headache... http://www.autolabscopediagnostics.com/electron.htm Nice graphic in this one: http://www.mste.uiuc.edu/murphy/HoleFlow/HoleFlow.html Poor explanations such as in the first link (where terminology is confused e.g mixing words such as energy/force, or conventi...

Re: Standby or Not
My guess is, cathode stripping aside, the only major issue would be the possibility of internal arcing, and that much the same considerations would then apply whether the tube is at operating temperature or if it's cold.

Re: Standby or Not
Fella's Cathode stripping aside for the moment. What about my point above. 530 volts on the plates at startup until the rectifier warms up. Is this causing any extra wear and tear on the tubes? Chappy Hang on a minute, you made the statement, "Regardless of cathode stripping, I don't think that it ...

You beat me to providing that link jaffro, , here's a teaser as to the Wizard's opinion: "[cathode stripping is] an urban myth borrowed from transmitter and cathode-ray tube technology NOT ordinary 'receiving' valves"

Re: www.valvewizard.co.uk
Ill jump in, it's the 100K Rk in the cathode follower David is refering to. Blencowe does an analysis of the DC coupled cathode follower, which can be biased to permanently draw grid current and exhibit compression and 2nd harmonic distortion. It's very interesting and Blencowe highlights an effect ...
