Re: +9V/0V/-9V DC power supply

I knew you guys would come up with the goods! Thanks for the tips. I'll look around a bit at the solutions you are suggesting.

+9V/0V/-9V DC power supply

Hi, all, This is likely beneath most of you, but I can't think of a group I'd rather send this question out to. I have an old Raven Labs preamp, and the power supply finally died. I can use batteries in it, but I'd rather use a power supply if possible. The supply has a 300ma rating, but it doesn't ...

Re: EVM-12S?

I have both speakers. The 12L wins out a little on clean tones to my ears, particularly in the high end. The 12S wins out overall.

...but then I'm really leaning more toward G12-65's anyway.

Re: 102 Feedback City

I swear I remember somebody suggesting that Tony plug the pre output into a different amp to see if the amp still behaved the same way, which I thought was a really interesting idea. I just skimmed this thread again for the first time in 2 weeks, and didn't see...Tony, did you do that?

Re: Homemade power tube retainers?

...here's a pic of a Hot Cat with a shock-insulated clamp. Looks a lot like the clamp for a multi-section canister cap -- a variation of the hose clamp idea above. My Bad Cat had these, too. I think you're right about them being the clamps for caps. The red part on mine was a layer of felt. Not ver...

Re: Quinn goes PCB

I own a Glaswerks Zingaro now. PCB-based. Man, this is a nice amp and a killer value. Done right, I guess there's absolutely nothing wrong with using PCB's. But I bet you've got to have the technical know-how to pull it off, not just look for the easiest layout and go for it. Thanks for the nice co...

Re: Best compromise screen R for 6L6 and EL-34 operation

I've got 1K in mine and have swapped back and forth with 6L6 and EL34s. They both sound great. I haven't noticed any loose low end. My experience is that you may not notice it until you try. Then all of a sudden you think "Wow, that's been giving me some problems in some venues." It's not dramatic,...

Re: Best compromise screen R for 6L6 and EL-34 operation

measure the voltage drop over the screen resistors More importantly, what is the screen voltage compared to the plate ? If it's a 'high plate' D-style where there's a large difference between then screens and plates, then yes you can get away with very small screen resistors. If the screens are at ...

Thanks, all, I'll try a couple of the lower values and see if anything catastrophic happens.

Heh, it does beg. But the mean is not always the best compromise, hence the question.

I'm basically looking for the "how low can I go" question, since to my ear that sounds better for the 6L6 types.

Best compromise screen R for 6L6 and EL-34 operation

I have a fixed bias D-style amp that is currently wired for 6L6s using 470ohm screen resistors. I'm interested in making it also able to run EL-34s. Trouble is that putting 1.5k in there is fine for the EL-34s, but seems to make the 6L6s sound kind of poorly-defined in the bass. Anyone had good luck...

2-conductor shielded with teflon?

Anyone have a good source for low capacitance teflon shielded with two conductors in it? Looking for something that can stand up to soldering better and can do there-and-back runs from controls to the board.

Thanks!

Re: PAB comparisons

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a Glaswerks Zingaro in the house, and I was surprised at how little I care for the PAB as implemented there (it's not Gary's design, it's Dr. D's). But it's a little trickier to experiment on a PCB-based amp.

Re: PAB comparisons

Resurrecting this thread...because I'm interested in the feedback, too.

In particular, trying to see if the way the D'Lite does it with half of a relay is about the same as the way #183 does it, which sounds nasal and not all that useful to me.
