Re: Latest Build - Three-Channel Maq Daddy 50W Head

:) Hi! It is nice to see also other brave men building real 3-channel p-to-p-amp projects. We have already done several that kind of amps by now. We have a modular architecture so that customer can choose almost any preamp module he wants including modified SLO100 lead channel. Poweramp is also mod...

Re: Your thoughts on Power Scaling.

:) I have put VVR/power scaling to many amps. For some reason which I cannot tehcnically explain, VVR seems to work best in certain style amps. All these amps are cathode biased and some of them without negative feedback. Some of them were fully scaled and some only in PA. It seems that in high powe...

Re: What's in a Mars Specialist?

I do not know anything of Mars Specialist, but I have done several modified 5E3 amps and installed VVR power scaling to a couple of them. With this amp, when there is no master volume, I ended scaling the whole amp, which seems to work the best way in this case. I have used VVR power scaling in many...

EU tube amp makers

:D Hi! I am Harry from Finland manufacturing hand made Bluetone tube amps. They have nothing to do with now closed factory of Blue Tone amps made in USA. I have made also several Trainwreck based amps. My web pages are www.bluetone.fi. So far I have done some 100 different tube amps, all to Finnish ...

Re: how to tune an amp to a specific guitar and player?

I have built some 90 tube amps for guitar and bass players and learned also something in that process. One key question is to ask what kind of music customer plays. Second question is how loud his band plays. Only after that I start to make some serious proposals. Making one offer to a potential cus...

Re: Lower output EL84 or subsitute?

I tried also a pair of 6AQ5/EL90 tubes for a 5F6-A Bassman amp I made but that sound was not what I was after. I replaced those 7-pin miniatyre power tubes with real 6V6GT:s and it was a huge improvement soundwise. If you want to control output power, one easy way is to use power scaling/VVR for it....

Re: Lower output EL84 or subsitute?

:D I have used a pair of 6AK6 tubes in push pull configuration successfully. They give some 2-3 W output with low plate voltages like 280 V. To get higher rail voltages ( app. 320 V) for preamp, I use VVR technology to control output power but also to reduce power tube plate voltages. You can use VV...

Re: 200 Watt poweramp with 2 KT120

:D Congrats of the new baby. I bet it sounds good. I made last autumn one bass amp with 4xKT-120 power tubes giving some 250-300 W power depending on distortion level. Our band bass player wished to have a real tube monster and he got it. I wonder why people have not used more that particular tube i...

Re: Bass amp project w/ clips (Updated)

:) Hi! PT is a toriodial one from here www.tubetown.de It is pretty cheap and works well in this amp. OT is from Italy from www.inmadout.com which is a smaller boutique manufacturer. Their prices are competitive in european level. I am pretty happy with that combination. Unfortunately I do not have ...

Re: Bass amp project w/ clips (Updated)

:) Hi MarcoI I got good results using 4xKT-120 power tubes in my new Bluetone Ace of Bass Head. It gives some 300 W output power which is enough anywhere you play. I did it to our bass player and his sound improved dramatically with it and a new Markbass 4x10" cab. His sound is now very articulate w...

Re: Going from prototype to production

Link to my web pages is www.bluetone.fi By the time I was inventing brand/name to my tube amps, I searched with google if thre are any companies with that name. I did not find any, but later it came out that there was a company in USA with name Blue Tone manufacturing guitar amps based on transistor...

Re: Going from prototype to production

I started building hand made tube amps as a hobby when I was young, but now I am manufacturing them on semi professional basis. I started this business more seriously some 5 years ago by creating my own web pages and a brand/name for my amps. My first customers were my band mates, and now everybody ...

Re: Lower watt output TWs?

I have a fixed bias version where bias is adjusted to appr. 70 % of 6AQ5 max 12W dissipation. My PT is a Hammond with 2x250 V, which produces some 325 V to power tube plates, despite 250 V is an official maximum plate voltage. I have now played some hours with that amp without any problems. 6AQ5 tub...

Re: Lower watt output TWs?

I use VVR in one of my amps to scale preamp first stage plate voltages from 170 V to 270 V to achieve Deluxe, Pro, Super and Twin Reverb voltages when needed. Higher voltages mean more headroom and dynamics. In this case I call my application "Dynamics". I have also successfully used VVR to limit 2x...
