Re: Source For Nice Looking Nuts & Bolts? 4-40 etc

The ones you want are called "binding head" machine screws. McMaster carries them.

Re: Princeton Reverb ... tweaking

What tank are you using? On a recent AB763 build, the 4AB3C1B was way too much for my taste, but an 8AB2C1B was just about right. You can also add a dwell control if there's too much "tail" on the reverb. Just replace the 1M grid load with a trimmer. Run the cap to the input, wiper to grid, and bott...

Re: Number of tubes, or power?

I guess the "experiment" would be to compare 4 6V6s with 2 6L6s with simlarly sized iron - or perhaps 4 K66s vs 2 KT88s. I've built a few 4x6V6 amps and they sound "faster" and more responsive to me. One in particular was an early 4x6V6 D'Lite Bluesmaster with 35watt output transformer. Some of the...

B+1 is 328/290 B+2 is 323/279 B+3 is 173/212 B+4 is 105/187 B+5 is 100/183 Tube voltage isn't even close to where it should be B+1 & B+2 look OK. B+3 - B+5 don't look right at all. With no tubes installed, those voltages should be much higher. I looked closely at your PS cap wiring and it looks cor...

Re: Single tube reverb in a Marshall

The problem with implementing the Rocket Reverb circuit is the NFB on the PI. On non-NFB PIs, it's easy to return the reverb to the bottom of the PI, but NFB will play havoc with that circuit. Andy Fuchs advised me once that it CAN be done, but I'd probaly need an engineering degree to follow the st...

Re: Single tube reverb in a Marshall

The 1-tube reverb is also used in several Mesa amps if you need examples. The best example I know of for a Marshall implementation is the Pignose 60VR. It's a simple take on a 2204 MV and sounds VERY good.

Re: Hotrod deluxe into a JTM 45....can it be done..........

The Blues Deluxe does have a choke. Based on size I'd guess it's a 125C3A (Deluxe Reverb). My reasoning going into this project was that it probably wouldn't sound like a BF Twin, but it would sound better than a stock Blues Deluxe. FWIW, Andy Fuchs did a Marshall conversion of HRD and it sounded gr...

Re: Hotrod deluxe into a JTM 45....can it be done..........

The PT is kinda puny but OK for 5881s or 6L6s. Don't try EL34s. Not sure about the OPT. The one in my Blues Deluxe is about the same size as a Vibroverb and suffers the same lack of bass response. That said, I used the stock iron and speaker in mine with an AB763 circuit and it sounds MUCH better th...

Re: 6V6 HRM

funny when I use a MM on the PI resistor 91k (one side) the volume of the thumps goes way down then stops? That would leave me to believe that the problem is related to the PI for sure. Not sure what replacing the other preamp caps will do to fix it. Make sure you ground all preamp caps + PI (B+3 t...

Re: Tophat ods 100

Top Hat amps are cool. Some of Brian's early stuff looks a bit untidy, but the newer models are very neat. It wouldn't surprise me if he built this as a request from a customer. I've only heard two Top Hats, an Ambassador and an early Emplexador...both sounded great to me.

Re: how is a dumble voiced differently than a blackface fender?

I guess it depends on which Dumble tone stack you're looking for. With stock AB763 values, try grounding the bass pot with a 10k resistor, change the mid pot to a 100kL, and up the treble cap to 330pF. That should put you in the ballpark for an early Dumble tone stack.
