Re: Blackface Fender Showman....Sucks with Pedals

I think it's vital to take the perspective that pedals are designed around specific amps. I don't like TS pedals unless they're flatter in the mids. That you like a ZD is good. I agree with Fender BF amps. I wouldn't recommend it for a guy with a 2203...right? Keep the ZD, look at a Rat and Barber p...

Also there's a KT66 spec about how close they can be in a pair. C to C is about 4.5" I think.

Re: diode string protection express mod

I believe KF used the diode strings partly because he was familiar with them from his Ampeg days [clip] He did also say that only the 1N4007 was OK soundwise, and not to use later "improved" types which he believed did have a deleterious effect on tone. Yes, the V series amps have these, but not st...

Re: PRivera era Super Champ

Having been on the edge of it at the time, PR was making 'suggestions' to Ed Jahns about most of those amps, but he designed the Super Champ himself. It became a staple for LA studio musicians...now think about how many LA studio guitarists there were...sold 30 or so amps. Nobody was getting rich. A...

Re: reducing the signal to the PI on a 2204

Do you have a load box? Put it in parallel with whatever cab you have...same impedance. That's -3dB, or another way, your 50W amp is now a 25W. Alternately, JJ 6V6S and adjust the Z appropriately.

Re: How about Hammond 1760J for AC30 output transformer?

If you can find a connection with an MM 25+, they're not any wor$e than any other make. If not, I would go with a Heyboer Woden OT. I don't know the number, but it's supposed to be just fine. The MM might give you better resale...dunno. Do not go with Hammond or a Fender. AC-30 iron may as well be M...

thin 3 wire power cord?

I've got a 1939 Rickenbacher model 59 in and I don't want to take a Greenlee to the power cord hole. Any favorite replacements? The original is about 0.22" x 0.11". I have a good selection of grommets...not sure I've ever worked on something nearly 80 years old!

Shipping rates?

Who has the best rates right now? Anyone who has shipped anything large, heavy or just odd, knows that the rates were raised by all players in January. Several years ago, USPS introduced the flat rate boxes, and frankly, domestic and international shipping was simplified. I guess they made a mistake...

Re: JCM 800 Bias Problem

The trim pot definitely sounds suspect. I can't tell what you what is wrong, but basically trim pots and electrolytic caps are cheap and far less reliable than a carbon film resistor. Look a those components and make sure that bias ground is really ground. You don't see nylok nuts in production amp...

Re: Postal rates making me go postal!

I too was caught unawares. I needed to ship a speaker to NYC and was absolutely appalled at the quotes. I went with FedEx...the only one under $30. From Jim's post, it doesn't sound like businesses are getting much of a break over retail customers.

Re: Rocket Speakers Suggestion

The Eminence Red Fang is a 50W alnico speaker for under 200 USD. Not sure if it's a good idea for the Rocket, but it is alnico. I don't know what sort of VAT there on imports to the EU.

Put a known good 20uF/500V across the power caps, one at a time. Sort of dangerous of course...you could tack it in each position
