Re: The Mini Wreck Lives !!!

Hi Steve,

there was a design published in an old yahoo groups forum. Here is the version that I have (with my modifications in it):

http://www.sopht.ca/schematics/derail1-modif-2.jpg

Please note that it is Jones Amplifications design. I simply document a few mods.

Cheers,
Stephane.

Re: The Mini Wreck Lives !!!

Cool,

another single ended Express! That makes 2 different designs (that I know of). Yours and Jones Amplifications.

I have a variable cathode on the 'clipper' stage. It can go from 1k to 26k. 10k makes it a typical Express stage and 1k makes it a real gain monster.

Cheers,
Stephane.

Re: Mini Wreck?

Some questions: 1. Why the 22k resitor on the input? That is the value that was on the schematic. You can set this to any value between none-68k. 2. Why the filament reference on the power tube? This reduces hum injected by the filament. 3. 5K6 at the grid of the pwoer tube must reduce power tube g...

Re: Mini Wreck?

Well,

the first 3 gain stages are the same stages as the Express. So, it's a trainwreck express but single ended.

The modifications I added simply extend the amp.

Stephane.

Re: Mini Wreck?

Sorry to chime in so late. I have built a single ended trainwreck designed by David Jones. You can see the details (and small sound clips) here: http://www.sopht.ca/mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=42 The sound clips are of the ecl86 but it is now with an el84 and it really ...

It's the first type of joint at the top.

Do you have a few sound clips of the amp? I would be very interested in hearing it.

Re: newbie querstion: sorry if it's stupid! & tia

Hi,

well, from my understanding, Ken Fischer customized each amp specifically for a client. Instead of giving the amps serial numbers, he simply named them with a female name.

Cheers,
Stephane.

Re: "We don't need no stinkin volume..."

Hi Steve, you might want to look at a single ended express inspired amp. Look in the files section and look for derailment. Might be what you're looking for. I have such a beast at home (and it just got a cab!). I'll have to record some more sound clips. Details: http://www.sopht.ca/index.php?s=41 p...

Re: First clip of my Express build

I do know that single ended version will sound different than a push pull version, I have built a derailment (5 watt single ended). This might be similar to the dirty little monster or the Fuchs Lucky 7. I haven't really cranker her yet, but it is loud for a 5 watt. I'm waiting for a cabinet before ...

Re: Derailment ?

Hi MikeY, Your Derailment looks great Stephane. I thinking of trying a single El 34 version. MikeY Thanks for the kind words. It is a bit messy in terms of wires and all. Actually, currently, it's a bit more messy as I switched from buss wire to star grounding. But it sounds GREAT! Keep us posted on...

Re: Derailment ?

Hi Max, I have actually built a derailment: http://www.sopht.ca/index.php?s=41 The two sound clips at the bottom of the page are of the ECL86 version. I recently changed it into a 2x12ax7 + 1xel84 as they are easier to obtain. This amp has a lot of gain. I modified the design slightly. I added a swi...

Re: Express fires up but no sound (not even hum)..help!

Hi Rich, don't worry, you'll find the problem. It took me about 15 hours to find the source of hum in my amp. It's a long process but you learn alot in the process. Makes the second build easier! I'm worried that you are blowing alot of fuses. Something is not right with that. When you said that cor...

Re: Express fires up but no sound (not even hum)..help!

As a recap, I think that Rich has 2 problems: 1- first preamp tube has wrong voltages (first two preamp stages) 2- power tubes aren't biased properly For 1, Rich can you check that there is a wire going from b+5 to the 100k plate resistors as Legin suggested? If you do have a wire from b+5 to the fi...

Re: Express fires up but no sound (not even hum)..help!

Hi Rich,

ok so the readings are off on the plates (and cathodes). Time to back track. Can you take the reading off of the filter caps? This will give you the various b+ (b+1, b+2, etc). We will able to know where the drop in voltage comes from.

Thanks,
Stephane.
