Re: Derailment muddy low-end question
Hi, which variant of the derailment did you build? For what it's worth, I find the derailment to be fairly bright, certainly not muddy (at least my build)! On my build, I had to increase the .0022uF cap after stage 3 to a 0.0047uF cap to cut down on the brightness. Which tubes are you using? Cheers,...

Re: Very low power amp 1-2 watts
Well, if 50mw is considered the optimal bedroom volume, you can try this amp: http://www.sophtamps.ca/mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=26&Itemid=38 This is roughly 35-40mW. Not a lot of distortion available but, with a simple boost in front, it can grind! Sadly, the tubes are not curr...

Hi cobalt,
looking at the schematic, which cap are you talking about?
Cheers,
Stephane.

Re: Tweed Caps
Bonjour Fred! Ca fait toujour plaisir de pouvoir echanger un peu en francais sur des forums :) Ok, I wasn't aware that you were going to change the values. Here is what I am aware of: - Mallory 150 seem to be what a lot of people working on Fender amps go for. - As for the PIO, they will definately ...

Re: Tweed Caps
I'm not sure that changing the capacitor from what's in there to Orange drops or mallory's will help. You need to change the values. Looking at the 5E3 schematic: http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/schem/deluxe_5e3_schem.gif I would try the following: Lower both cathode bypass caps to 10 or 5uF (the 25-25 ...

Re: Power Up; Time to push some electrons!
Allynmey is absolutely right here. Check the cathode and plate resistors. Make sure that the cathode is 10k and the plate is 100k not the other way around...Allynmey wrote:V@ Cathode looks high. The plate is high also. Do you have any good pics to look at?

Re: Wire color-coding
I use the following color coding:
green -> heaters
yellow -> audio signal
red -> high voltage (i.e. plates)
white -> cathodes
black -> ground
Makes it a bit easier to debug / chopstick my amps if there is oscillation.
Cheers,
Stephane.

Re: Clone vs real deal... mp3?
Woa,
I actually liked clone a bit better than the real one... That is shocking to me but also very comforting as it is within my reach!
Thanks for taking the time to record and post this side by side comparaison. It is VERY appreciated.

Well,
I think that Y is the real one. But both clips are great! X has a great blues grit to it. And as always, superb playing on those clips.
Cheers,
Stephane.

Re: Wreck Junior.
Forgot to post this picture earlier. My derailment is in a combo. The faceplate is a very cheap 1/16" wood panel that was very clumsily engraved and coated.

Hi Greg,
if the comment was oriented at me, I have to say that there are a LOT of more talented people here that build a lot more stuff than me!
Cheers,
Stephane.

Dirty little monster - need info wreckboy!
Wreckboy,
I know a lot of people are dying to know what makes the dirty little monster tick. Can you post details / pictures of the actual amp? A gut shot would be awesome!
Cheers,
Stephane.

Re: Wreck Junior.
Hi Ken,
that would be correct. Pin 8 connects to the filament reference. Basically, you reference the filament to the cathode of the power tube. If pin 8 is the cathode, you reference it to this pin. If pin 7 is the cathode, you reference it to this pin.
Cheers,
Stephane.
