Re: C-lator hum

Good to hear you found the problem. I don't really understand why Nik has changed things and put the transformer inside the chassis. But he is a very helpful guy so i'm sure it will be solved.

Re: C-lator hum

I have the exact same Ceriatone C'lator with five differences: 1. The transformer is outside the chassis. 2. All metal parts are have reference ground to chassis (pots, switches etc.) 3. High quality shielded cable.(Both inside the unit and to connect the unit to an amp) 4. Two chassis grounds. (1= ...

Re: C-lator hum

The chassis and lid are made of steel. This could explain vibrations. Especially when it lays lose on top of the chassis.

The transformer in the enclosure was probably not the best idea Nik had. I dont understand it either because it looks like the exact same PT, except the bell cover.

Re: C-lator hum

I was looking at the transformer mains and high voltage wiring. Could you take a picture of the side of the transformer where the wires are connected? The reason i ask this is that it looks like the high voltage and mains wiring are crossed. On my Ceriatone transformer mains connections are at the ...

Re: C-lator hum

I unscrewed the AC ground only from the chassis. Hum is still there. No change. Yes, I left the other two from the big caps still connected to ground. So lifting the AC ground did not help. Any other ideas? 1. Did you take the paint off the chassis for all connections to the chassis? (Solder lugs, ...

The groundwire of the two 33uF caps need to go to signalground.

Very suitable as audio input amp. Low noise, low bias, high transconductance

In my own amp i used this one:

Re: #002 Steel String Singer - almost there

If you are going to change the switches i can recommend using 11 position switches (blocked at 7 positions) like the original hand drawn schematic. This way you can make a common bus for the capacitors like the original schematic is drawn and as is visible on the gutshot of SSS001. (But if you measu...

Re: #002 Steel String Singer - almost there

I think it is best to wire the connector grounds together. I didn't see this in the video. The amp sounds nice!

Re: #002 Steel String Singer - almost there

Dit you put in the ground wires to the capacitor board?
Try to measure if you have 0 ohm between all the ground connections and chassis.

Re: SSS heater lead dress

Seems to me that Valve Wizard is fixing something that isn't a problem. I used filament wiring A in my SSS and B in my ODS ( a little tighter wound though). There is no hum at all, regardless of volume and gain settings. If there is filament hum present in a properly wired amp, it is most likely due...

Re: CF driver Va - Vk voltages in SSS consensus?

I have been thinking about the powersupply and standby switch in the SSS002 and came up with a theory that i tested. Rootz stated that there would be no room for the extra 50uF caps on the supply board, based on the digital gutshot he made. But when i look at the gutshot of the SSS004 - which has th...

Re: CF driver Va - Vk voltages in SSS consensus?

No it is not complicated and i don't think it's wrong, just a resistor that was missed. The more i think about it, the more i believe the high voltage is not supposed to be shut of completely for the reasons i mentioned earlier. Other simple things also got drawn wrong. It happens when tracing a cir...

Re: CF driver Va - Vk voltages in SSS consensus?

Hi Rootz, interesting analysis you did with the Fusion and Eagle technique regarding the similarities between some ODRs and SSS. Looking at the power supply of SSS002 (also briefly touched upon by Richard re the Standby switch) I can not comprehend why there is a first filter (2x47uF in series) fol...
