Re: D circuit changes for active pickups?

If it's just a matter of the active pickup signal being too high and ***IF*** you don't mind drilling a small hole in the chassis or face plate, you may consider replacing the 1M resistor on the input jack with a 1M RV6 style pot. Dial it down for active pickup or set it to max for normal. You coul...

Re: D circuit changes for active pickups?

A guitar with active circuitry should have a buffered / low impedance output. Hence adjusting its volume control shouldn’t affect the tone. So just turn its volume control down till it sounds best, then implement a potential divider at the amp’s input which replicates that setting. That should do t...

D circuit changes for active pickups?

Hi all, This is kind of an obscure question, but has anyone done any mods to the #183 style circuit to more happily play with active pickups? I don't use active pickups, but was talking with someone who does and uses a #183 style circuit and it's not playing nice with the active pickups. He'd owned ...

Re: Steel String Singer basic question

I also place the tanks the same way in my Overdrive Reverb heads and they come out nice and quiet. I keep my heads about 10 3/4 in in tall and that is all the room I need to keep things nice and quiet. Most important thing is to keep the red reverb tank jack furthest from the power transformer and ...

Steel String Singer basic question

Hi guys, I've been thinking of building a Steel String Singer. I've built lots of ODS's...but never gone down this rabbit hole. One quick question - did he actually add a reverb tank to the heads? Or was reverb only in the combos? I'm wondering how you'd get a tank in a head cabinet without inducing...

Mercury Magnetics PT and OT - brand new

I have an OT and PT I bought direct from Mercury a couple months ago, but I'm never going to get to that project. They are both red. I have them both configured for "stand up", but you can mount the PT in the "laid down" position as well. FBFBM-0M output transformer is designed for 2 6L6 power tubes...

Re: Express preamp - first attempt

Wow, that's exactly the kind of result I'm looking for. So that youtube video, did that have the extra valve? Or is that video of just the Express preamp (kind of like I'm doing) but with some tweaks? (like Mark A's suggestions?) Mark Actually - if you had a schematic to share that would be great. I...

Re: Express preamp - first attempt

Mark, thanks for your comments. I can change out the pots and the anode resistors and remove the cap, as well as change the coupling cap before the 56K - I'll have to see what I have in stock for caps. I've been reading several threads on the board (many of which mention you :) ) and decided to take...

Re: Express preamp - first attempt

Ah. I guess that makes sense. That must be how it gets that "turn up the guitar volume and get overdrive, turn it down and get clean" feel to it. It seems more along the lines of the gain in an AC30's preamp stage. Maybe I'll have to do something with that spare triode.

Express preamp - first attempt

Hi folks. Haven't posted in this forum for many years - hope you are all well! I've built lots of D-clones, and D style preamps and know basically very little about Trainwreck. I thought "what if I put together a TW Express preamp stand alone, could I get overdrive out of it?" D and Marshall preamp ...

Thanks, Gents! I'll add the dot to my schematic :)

Man...wooden sides. I hadn't looked closely at that before.

Re: Jazz/Rock schematic differences - which is correct?

Thanks, Phil. Sorry for the confusion - my question is, which is correct to the 183 schematic? I've seen #183 versions out there that have that node connected (i.e. big black dot), and some that don't (like in this version). Not sure which version to trust :)

Jazz/Rock schematic differences - which is correct?

Hi guys, I'm building a pre-amp based on the #183 schematic. I notice there is one node around the jazz/rock switch which is shown connected on some schematics, and not connected on others. This is the top of the Bass potentiometer. I'm attaching a clip of the schematic. Some schematics show the cap...

Where to put an effects loop in a post PI master vol crct?

Hi everyone, It looks like the general "D" style effects loop is right off the master volume between the pre-amp and the PI. I have a circuit that's similar to an AB763 with an added D'style OD circuit and I've put in a Lar-mar style post PI master volume. So in something like that if I want an effe...
