Re: Check my new amp out! Gibson GA-18
Hey Casey, Yeah, I plan on getting her up and running stock before anything else. I have all the filter and cathode caps on order along with the cathode resistors (sticking with the carbon comp). The NFB switch will be reversible if I end up doing it. Thats why I'm making a replacement baffle too so...

Re: SVT fan noise
That's a nice SVT. I have a '74 that has been a good friend to me for a while. Needs some work though.

Re: Check my new amp out! Gibson GA-18
Firestorm, I assume I could even throw in a switch for the NFB and stuff? Yep, I did that for another guy who has one. I didn't want to drill a hole so I epoxied a mini switch to the bottom of the chassis. NFB vs. no NFB: best of both worlds. If you have an amp with a 10" alnico in it, you might wa...

Re: Check my new amp out! Gibson GA-18
So I just got the amp today. Here's the rundown. 1) It smells like basement...was expecting it. But the cabinet is really solid. 2) The speaker has rips around the surround and the cone is actually ridiculously warped. 3) Tube sockets are looser than a..i'll keep my language clean. 4) Lame filter ca...

Yeah, it looks to have had a cap job done in the past. Well no reason to not do it right this time.

Looks cool, I'll let ya guys know when It arrives.
Edit: On closer inspection it looks like that mass of electrical tape is a mod of some kind. Oh well, i'll strip it down to factory!

Re: Bright caps on EXP volume pot
I used shielded wire on both of the V1 grids (setup just like a Komet 'over the board and zip tied together') and have just switched to the "revised" treble cap wiring.
Whisper quiet.

Re: So I want to make a 5E3....where should I get a kit?
Thanks for all the advice guys. I talked with Bruce the other day. I'll probably be picking up his 5e3 kit with the mercury mag OT and Humbucker I&II and PI mods, NOS 12AY7 and his STK cap upgrade. I'll pick up his cab too. Then I'll throw in a Weber 12A125. Even with my Fender discount I'll be able...

Casey,
Words of wisdom like always!
Dart,
Thanks for the heads up, I just assumed the lower noise parts would help but if not. Then cool! I'll just have to be extra careful on the heater wiring.
This thing looks real simple. I could get it together in a night.

Re: So I want to make a 5E3....where should I get a kit?
God this forum rocks! Thanks for the heads up Dart. 720+ shipping for everything wow! I might as well add the MM OT transformer, Sprague atom, and NOS 12AY7 upgrades! Yeah I know its not mil spec....but I play at blues bars 3-4 nights a week and I need something bullet proof for sure. I would think ...
