You don't/ can't solder to aluminum.
Honestly I can't tell. It feels like steel, but with whatever plating it's got on it, I don't know. seems sturdy though.

Re: Speaker mounting

I just did a quick Google search for you, here is a photo of an audiophile speaker surround (it already had an arrow pointing to it!), and even here you can see it's covering up the mounting hole. Re: Speaker mounting

Steve, don't worry about it. Even custom made speakers will have some of the "surround" overlapping the holes. This is just a mechanical connection to the frame, and is not part of the sound producing "cone"...which is everything towards the center of the surround. Just poke it through (Front to Bac...

Re: Ebay Amp Chassis

I got one of these chassis second hand from a forum member. It's surprisingly well built, but I agree with curb dog...the chassis is galvanized or something and looks like it would be difficult to solder to. Everything will need to be scruffed and bolted with good star washers.

Re: Pot Specs in Express

which bourne ones? the standard non-sealed? i've been seeing some good things about their 95 series sealed pots. I really like stainless steel sealed pots...but honestly I don't like the quality of the PEC ones at all. The old USA/Mexico A/B Clarostats are sturdier by far. Whichever ones ApexJr has...

from the information I've gathered. The NOS Groove tube mullard, Siemens, and Telefunken where all used by ken. GT #4 el84 and Tungram ECC83 being mentioned as being the first pick the rest are just named dropped in general chat. Too bad today's GT isn't yesterdays GT. And wasn't Ken sponsored by t...

Re: Is maple a good choice for a cab?

Those are some seriously beautiful cabs. I agree with Sellout. I'd build it out of whatever you want...there are other things that make bigger changes than what hardwood is used in a speaker cabinet, and it can always be adjusted for. I think the density/deadness of a material makes much more of a d...

Re: Pot Specs in Express

Consider the 2 watt pots "industrial" grade that can hold up to regular gigging and will probably outlast you. If you're building a keeper amp, $10 a pot is a small price to pay to have an amp you will give to your kids in your will. :P

Re: JJ Tubes

you should keep an eye out for the original Tesla blue glass EL34 They sound Awesome and also came in RED glass! IMHO - The best new production EL34 in terms of flat freq, smooth tone, and tube life are the Winged =C=. Followed by the JJ/Tesla EL34 and Mullard Reissue from Groove tubes. I believe t...

Then perhaps we can agree that just because a part is machined from teflon that it does not guarantee against arcing?

Nit really confortable to solder them, and you'll need to isolate each pin with a few shrinking tubing.
But the quality is excellent.
They are around 10 usd each.

Those are exactly the ones I found on eBay (China) that I was considering.

Re: Outstanding tube sockets?

Not so. I've had to replace some high voltage plugs on a microscope that were teflon - they arced VERY well. was the teflon arcing or were the pins arcing? teflon has no risk of the material becoming conductive. When it was disassembled, there were arc traces between pins. To the tech and me, it di...
