Re: Finished my Express build last night, odd voltage issues (fuses blowing)
Well it looks like I installed a diode in reverse (the one feeding the 10uf/100v capacitor on the PS board). Looks like I'll be ordering a new one and fixing that bonehead mistake. The diode is probably still good. But it won't hurt to order another one. They are cheap enough. What you really ought...

Re: Remember old times when NOS was just N
They will match up to five tubes for just 2 bucks extra per tube! They only have 3 on hand at the moment :). I'm sure they all *match* and will also match the other two that they scrounge from somewhere eventually. Now is the crime charging an extra 10 bucks for questionable matching or for charging...

Re: No user serviceable parts inside...
To be fair, the label does say "water proof". So, that is one way to do it.

Re: Ground lift question.
What exactly do you mean by ground lift circuit? I'm assuming you going to install a modern 3 prong AC chord and disable the whole deathcap thing? If you do this and then follow Merlin's advise, you have only two connections to the chassis. First the safety earth ground from the ac chord connected t...

Re: Fender Super 60 to ODS 124
I have a fender super 60 head and have also built an ODS into a smaller non-traditional jtm45 sized chassis. So, I get where you are coming from: https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=33427 I'm not saying you won't be able to stuff a full ODS circuit into a fender super 60 chassis. But it ...

Re: Preamp Safety Measures (Incorrect Transformer Input Wiring)
What about the safety hazards inside these preamps: Are there any lethal voltages left after the preamp is unplugged for a few hours or are the filter caps inside these preamps big enough to still hold lethal voltages for months and years? If you do not know how to safely measure the voltages and d...

When you are Pete Thorn, it does not matter much if you use the iconic amp or the pedal

Re: Where does tone come from in a guitar?
A point that is not to be missed is that noticeable differences can often be dialed out with volume and EQ adjustments. Dave Friedman brings this up often during his Tone Talk podcasts. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9f8xgtLTLa_iKV_DR4rUjQ He has frequently swapped components in two otherwise id...

Re: Where does tone come from in a guitar?
His one on amps was kinda sketchy (at best). But the one he does on speaker cabinets is better. I've always found speakers make a huge contribution. But I've never experimented with the actual cabinet to this extent.

Re: What makes high gain amps to have higher voltage gain thus higher peak dB gain?
IThis theoretical gain number has little meaning to tech people but can serve as an indication of just how fuzzy sounding an amp is. The higher the number, the fuzzier the sound. (Not necessarily related to louder, more power.) And that's something that non-tech people can relate to and compare amp...

Re: How to find the peak decibel gain of the highest gain channel of a high gain amp?
The reason I don’t understand your interest in exceeding this level of gain (115 or 140) is because in real world scenarios using a typical output guitar pickup, the signal level into the amplifier is already too high for this level of gain because clipping occurring and reducing gain. This is a ve...

Re: How to find the peak decibel gain of the highest gain channel of a high gain amp?
It is possible to distort a signal to the point that adding more distortion is undetectable. This video always makes me chuckle for some reason .

Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems
In addition to all the great suggestions already posted, I'd take a look at the entrance to the overdrive stages. The ODS has a trimmer and voltage divider here that dumps like 90 to 99% of the signal before the two overdrive stages work with it. You might wanna do something similar before your "lea...

Re: How to find the peak decibel gain of the highest gain channel of a high gain amp?
Is it possible to get the peak decibel gain from the highest gain channel from schematics alone? If it is possible, how? It is possible to calculate the theoretical gain of a circuit from the schematic alone. Merlin shows how to calculate the gain of a single gain stage here in the first chapter of...
