Marshall Major

I had a great amp tech that suggested we remove the KT88's and replace them with 6550's. Well the tone became rounder and fuller. The reason for making the switch wasn't for tone, but for cost. The tone just happened to be icing on the cake. As for clean, we put it on the scope and it was pedal stee...

Re: Multimeter suggestions?

Thank you to all that contributed to this thread.

I feel I got lucky and found a very nice Fluke 76 True RMS for $45.00.
It came with the case and leads and also an AC Current Probe.
Works like a champ.

Thank you again for your suggestions.

Multimeter suggestions?

I'd like some feedback from everyone and anyone about what they think is a great multimeter.
I'm not looking for a multimeter that doubles as a microwave, but a meter that does the job for amp building.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.
Thank you

Re: Gibson Factory Raided at Gun point

Yeah they hung a smart meter on my house a couple years ago. I wrote to the power company in an email expressing my concerns over the security and vulnerability of the system. I said, some kid in Russia is going to have a ball with this. A hacker could shut down a whole grid or sabotage it with a w...

RCA Radiotron Designer's Handbook.
I did a search and found this site:"Technical Books Online"
They have the Radiotron Designer's Handbook and lots of others to download.

Re: How does one determine what type of transformers are used?

The nice thing about this game is that; what you are looking to do you has already been done before, so it doesn't take a great technical exercise to do this. I do have the questions though......... 1. Why exactly the KT66 and not the 6L6? 2. How did you determine 30 watts? 3. What output section t...

Again thank you for all the great input.

I have picked up two books one of which was suggested here.
I picked up the book Designing Tube Preamps For Guitar and Bass By Merlin Blencowe and Valve Amplifiers By Morgan Jones.

Does anyone have any feedback on the second book by Morgan Jones, as the first book was suggested by surfsup?

You guys are the bomb!

Again thank you so much and with what you have suggested I think it's going to be a while before I post another question.
Not that I don't have them, but I'd rather be more informed before I ask.

Thank you

You guys are amazing.

To Phil_S, rsi, surfsup, Cliff Schecht, rdjones I knew that the crew here was just amazing and would provide me with answers and even resources for me to pursue this information. This is so amazing that I don't have the words to even come close to saying thank you for what you have shared with me. I...

How does one determine what type of transformers are used?

It's been a while since I've posted anything and since everyone here is so knowledgeable and nice I have a new question. I was talking to a tech the other day and he said if I was going to build an amp I should decide on the type of tube I would go with and then I would pick the transformers based o...

Perfect. Wish I'd said that. Kinda like Zen and the Art of Guitar Amp Building. Sorry about the lecture. You've got it.
Well, on the plus side now more people know a bit more about me and what I'm here for.

As for my take on your comments, no harm, no foul.

Re: Why so much mistery?

My understanding is there was only one Dirty Little Monster built, and the owner doesn't hang out here. Hello Doug H, Oh, if you'd like to see the Dirty Little Monster it's right here: http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3490&highlight= people who spend $10k on an amp don't necessarily want ...
