Capacitor selection

Here's an interesting article on the effect (or lack of) regarding different types of capacitors. The study is for guitars but the author concludes the same would apply for amps. Not suggesting I agree with this or not, just putting it out there as FYI. Given the fact that I've spent much time seeki...

Dumblator in an ab763?

I have a couple of Bandmasters and a Dual Showman with added effects loops and wondered what they would sound like with a Dumblator in the loop, basically adding another gain stage while enabling the amp volume to be turned up into the sweet spot but keeping the neighbors happy with the output volum...

Re: High Plate Classic? Should We build it.

For the 270 treble cap I combined a 120 in parallel with a 500 and then another 500 in series (what I had). measured 270 on the money so tolerances were in my favor. Very ugly, but with the way it sounds I'm leaving it that way.

Re: High Plate Classic? Should We build it.

Cobbled together some caps I had to get to Charlie's numbers for treble and snubbers...not pretty but sounds great! Really made the difference. Thanks again Charlie. It's not dark at all though I have my TMB set at 6, 2.5 and 3...somewhat similar to what I've seen on LCs pre ripper Dumbles. It nails...

Yeah, thanks Charlie!! I'll have to try that. Need to order some parts. Yes, bass pot unchanged.

Re: High Plate Classic? Should We build it.

Yes, went from skyliner to classic so just the caps and left in the 150 slope. Yeah, my trimmer is also 100k. In all fairness it sounds quite good but I will change the snubbers as you mentioned. Thanks again!

Re: High Plate Classic? Should We build it.

No I didn't. Not sure I follow the wisdom there. Just changed the stack. I'll try the lower 270pf snubbers. Thanks!

Re: High Plate Classic? Should We build it.

Thanks all! Just tried it myself and I really like it. Just for clarity are the V2 snubbers 270pf as per the low plate classic? I have 330s on the amp I did this on and it sounds very sweet but not really doing the Gregor neck pickup thing. Can't remember why I put those on years ago. I also used a ...

Re: Capacitor Outside Foil Placement Dumble

It really is Erwin. Now I need to do my other amps. Not exactly sure what to do with the tone stack caps. Just measure resistance to ground?

Re: Capacitor Outside Foil Placement Dumble

Just to follow up with another observation, amp now seems more friendly/consistent across multiple guitars. Tried 5 different humbucker guitars and the tone seems much more consistent e.g. no need to adjust tone controls on amp, just volume control on guitar. All sound better than ever before. Picku...

Re: Capacitor Outside Foil Placement Dumble

Had a little spare time today so decided to give this a try. Good excuse to play with a recently acquired scope. Was pretty skeptical but have always had much trust and respect for Gil and what he says. Only 3 were in backwards but 2 were in the "critical" group. I ignored the tone stack caps due to...

Re: Which ODS has better cleans?

There's one popular builder who uses a 120K slope resistor in some of his D voiced amps as a compromise. I think the compromised scoop helps keep the cleans more towards Fender while still providing a reasonably thick overdrive that stands out in the live band mix a little better than the 150K. Work...

Re: Getting a smoother OD

Just to follow up on the OT, Heyboer doesn't have the OT-4400 in stock right now as they are backed up several months due to Covid. They do have OT -4000 in stock which is same construction with slightly lower primary impedance. It's $125. I spoke to Arlyn there who is very helpful. I asked about wh...
