Re: The Porkchop has landed
Justin, Nothing that fancy. I designed it in Illustrator, printed it to heavy paper and spray-glued it to a piece of sheet brass. I then did a fake lamination with clear packing tape. (I work in graphics and have made mock-ups of just about everything that can be printed, so this was sort of a busma...

Re: The Porkchop has landed
Omar, Thanks, for the kind words and your maintenance of this NG. Soundclips are maybe a week away, but things are shaping up with this amp. I've chased down a problem with very strident bass (I replaced the caps around the PI with the values in the schematic as opposed to what I thought should got ...

Re: The Porkchop has landed
Soundclips are on route; the sound right now is too strident in the bass. I'm in tweaksville for a week before I can roll out an mp3 of my second rate guitar playing.

Re: Black Gate capacitor opinions
To second what Dai said, if you think of an amplifier as a modulated power supply, it's easy to see that PS components are part of the signal path. I used the Black Gate 50/50 500v in a hifi amp. I liked it better than the LCR cap it replaced, but when I rebuilt the amp on a bigger chassis I replace...

The Porkchop has landed
Hey, Thanks to everyone's direct and indirect help, I got this Rocket/AC-15 amp together and sounding ok. There's some things I want to tweak, of course, but the thing works and doesn't hum too much. It has two channels which are internally jumpered. One is basically the Rocket, the second is a take...

Re: Book/Gar Gilles-The How and Why of Tube Amps as Gar Sees It
Any book I have not mentionned and that should be on my wish list? The ARRL handbook, one from before the 70's. Contains my favorite chapter on power supplies and regulation. Granted, there's a lot of stuff in there guitar amp builders have no use for, but who better to turn to when dealing with RF...

two-point star ground q
Hi all, I want to double-check that my understanding of two point star grounding is correct, as per Randall Aiken's article on the subject. 1. First cap after the rectifier, B+ center tap and output stage cathode resistors are grounded on one star ground, preferably close to the first cap's negative...

Ground buss
Hi,
What grounding scheme do all y'all recommend? I like the idea of a ground buss across the back of the pots, but I imagine a world of hurt if I had to replace a pot.

Re: Calling Mark Abbott!!!!
Mark,
I've started work on a 15-watt Rocket-ish amp. Your notes are a big help. I finished the metalwork and bolting on the iron and sockets. Using an OPT from a Harmon Kardon integrated amp.
I really like the AC-30, but it's too loud for any gig I'll ever play, so I opted for 15 watts.

Re: 'I Don't Get It'
begging you pardon in advance for the rant that follows... Mad Scientist? Lord Valve? I'm sorry, but you don't get to pick your own nickname. A nickname is assigned to you by your alleged friends after you do something stupid or when they're too stupid/drunk to remember your name. It should be short...
