Re: Brown era Harmonic Trem; 4- vs 5-triode circuits?

Hi Lou, If you want to save on tubes and don't mind a bit of solid state circuitry outside the signal chain, you might want to think about using an opamp based oscillator. I've used the oscillator from the Electro Harmonix Wiggler effect box on Vox AC30-type vibratos and it works well. It has a grea...

Re: Gibson GAV-1 Vibrato

This vibrato is almost identical to the one in a Vox AC30. The only major difference is that Vox shorted out one side of the signal chain to also get tremolo. It works very well, just listen to an AC30 to get the idea. I don't know who first used the circuit commerically, but I think it may have bee...

Re: Mod to OD level (gain) pot

In addition to changing the taper of the gain pot, connecting the wiper and input lugs will create a variable high-pass filter, progressively cutting the bass response as the gain is decreased. I tried it out, but found that the overdrive gets quite thin-sounding at low-gain settings. I usually use ...

Re: Open back cabs

Hi, Just a thought before you start construction....the smoother sound you are hearing from the open-backed cabinet might be due to the speaker as much as the cab type. IMHO there is something magic about the sound of Fanes (extended freq. range maybe?) that makes clean sounds from Celestions etc. s...

Re: Understanding the OD entrance

Hi again Tommy, Electrical signals don't just choose the path with the least resistance and ignore others. They flow through any available path, and the resistance determines how much can get through. This might be a bit philosophical (yuck!) for a guitar amp forum, but the idea helped me when I was...

Re: Understanding the OD entrance

Hi Tommy, yes you are correct about the top scheme- when the trimmer is at max resistance (so the centre pin is touching ground) the signal goes to ground and nothing passes on to the OD stages. However, in the lower scheme, the signal flows down both the 100k and trimmer path to ground AND also the...

Re: Understanding the OD entrance

both of these schemes do approx the same thing, the major difference is the maximum signal that can pass through them. The max level for the top one (with the 200k resistor in series with the trimmer) is about -9.5dB, while the lower one attenuates the signal by about -4dB minimum. The 470k on the l...

Re: Dimensions for combo and head

here's the fonts I used, but I needed to squash the block one up a bit to make it fatter. I doenloaded them from a free fonts site, so I guess the're freeware and ok to post here

Re: Dimensions for combo and head

Cheers, some betterfonts would be great, but it might be good to wait a bit, in case anyone can make some improvements on the dimensions.

BTW, the TIF file I posted earlier works, so long as you download it (i.e. save page as ...), it just does not display, at least on mozilla.

Re: Dimensions for combo and head

Here's a copy of the front panel that I've been using. The dimensions were calculated from photos and info on this site. It's 19.25" by 2.25", pots are spaced at 1.40" and switches at 0.6". I know that the typeface is not quite right yet...I'm looking for a better one. Any suggestions/comments for i...

Re: Let's talk tone stacks

Yeah, the mid pot is a 250k 10% log taper (i.e. about 25k at half rotation). Same with the bass pot (500k 10% log taper). I'm not really sure what the difference is between log and audio tapers, but the 10% tapers work fairly well.

Re: Let's talk tone stacks

Here's a circuit of the tone stack I've been using lately. I've replaced the rock/jazz sw. with a 3 position mid boost using a centre-off switch. The first 2 positions are standard, giving a treble cap values of about 1000p and 330p, but when the 220k resistor is switched into the circuit you get an...
